Source - CBC [release]Athabasca Oil Sands Corp. has exercised its option to sell its remaining 40 per cent interest in the MacKay River oilsands project to a unit of Chinese oil giant PetroChina for about $680 million. The deal, announced Tuesday, gives PetroChina full ownership of MacKay River project, one of the newest of northern Alberta's oilsands developments. It continues a trend that has seen Chinese companies acquire miners, energy producers and other resources companies in Canada and around the world to secure future supplies of minerals, steel, oil and gas and other raw materials for its rapidly growing economy. Athabasca had sold PetroChina a 60 per cent stake in the project last year.[/release] Can Canadian companies stop being so damn short-sighted? Our largest industrial project now belongs entirely to China nice work. (yes, PetroChina is actually state-owned) Oil is going to become an important bargaining chip in the next few decades so we should be keeping as much of it managed by Canadian corporations as we can
China now owns large Canadian oilfields. What were the companies thinking?
What the fuck, I want government action to be brought into this.
Well fuck. On the brighter side, at least they're in range.
What the fuck is this shit?
China is going to rule the world, by buying it.
Whhhhaaaaat the fuck? [editline]4th January 2012[/editline] My government better fucking step in.
Is the infrastructure built at the site? just pull a Chavez and nationalize it later
Is the infrastructure built at the site? just pull a Chavez and nationalize it later
A conservative government nationalizing an industry? Well it is oil-related...
Fuck it, just make Canada a English speaking province of China.
A conservative government nationalizing an industry? Well it is oil-related...
I'm sure they could justify it as nationally privatizing it
What the fuck, I want government action to be brought into this.
Trudeau apparently had a 51% Canadian ownership plan but he was a filthy commie If it went through Harper would have gutted it though. Hell, maybe even Chrétien
Who was the dumb motherfucker who approved this?
Just noticed my stupid mistake, I copied the CBC title which makes it sound like all of the oil sands operations in Alberta were sold at once I should have put Athabasca Oil Sands Project since it was just the entirety of a project formerly owned by Athabasca Oil Sands Corp., namely the McKay River one If a mod wants to change "Alberta" in the title to either "Athabasca" or "McKay River, Alberta" to more accurately reflect the sale they can, otherwise people can just read the article instead of only the title [editline]4th January 2012[/editline] The amount sold was, I believe, 20% of the total oil sands aka the size of Holland
Are OPs no longer able to edit their own titles?
Wasn't china going to buy the oil that the US didn't pipe down if we didn't build that Keystone XL pipe? I guess they just said fuck-it and bought a large sum of the place out then?
Who was the dumb motherfucker who approved this?
Bribery and blackmail goes a long way.
Next they'll own all our fresh water. :v:
Great, now the Chinese government owns part of the province I live in. Only a matter of time before I see Chinese soldiers patrolling the streets.
