An AP analysis of water quality revealed dangerously high levels of viruses and bacteria from human sewage in Olympic and Paralympic venues — results that alarmed international experts and dismayed competitors training in Rio, some of whom have already fallen ill with fevers, vomiting, and diarrhea. It is the first independent comprehensive testing for both viruses and bacteria at the Olympic sites. Brazilian officials have assured that the water will be safe for the Olympic athletes. But the government does not test for viruses. Extreme water pollution is common in Brazil, where most sewage is not treated. Raw waste runs through open-air ditches to streams and rivers that feed the Olympic water sites. I guess this brings a whole new level of difficulty to the olympics. Not only do they test the endurance and stamina, but now the might of the immune system. I would actually watch this olympics if instead of gold medals, they get brown running shorts.
I know there's always sensationalist articles coming up before the olympics suggesting it will be a disaster but this is really fucked up. Sounds like they're not even capable of doing anything about it?

I doubt Brazil can do anything about it, but they should at least make an artificial clean water source for water sports.
The question is why they're holding the motherfucking Olympics in a country that's so shitty it can't even keep its water clean
Because they bid the most and the Committee bit the hook like a foolhardy carp? I wouldn't put it past them, if you'll excuse my optimism.
Thing is this has been known for a long long time and the only answer has been we can't clean it / it's still going ahead regardless. A fucking joke.
hahahahaha Rio waters? Bitch please Argentine enviro pollution always a step ahead of LATAM partners: Ladies and gentlemen, I present you.... THE RIACHUELO RIVER! Don't be deceived by the appareances! Since 1880, being contaminated by whatever the hell you can name. Slaughterhouses? Of course. Human shit? Of course. Toxic wastes? Of course. Industrial residues? Of course. Plastics and other recyclable material? Of course. Be warned. Any contact of a body part with the water lasting for more than one minute can potentially corrode the skin and leave only osteo structures. EDIT: Don't worry. One day I'll get to be the President, and our rivers will be clean and eco friendly as the German rivers. Just, wait for like 40 years.
Why do we keep sending these huge sports conventions to places that can't handle them? Rhetorical question, of course.
I've read interviews with sailors that have hit human bodies in these waters.
they want to develop their country,uh ? first they have to filter their water, damn it.

Get on Cleveland's level.
The question is why they're holding the motherfucking Olympics in a country that's so shitty it can't even keep its water clean
They paid the most under the table clearly, like fifa.
Well, at least it's been brought to the attention of the rest of the world. Maybe it'll pressure them to change. Hopefully.

I remember watching a VT about it way back when London 2012 had finished and i swear there was a thread here talking about it too cause i posted in it. I'm too tired to go fishing now but a quick Google search brings this up from January last year. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-latin-america-25686805 If you go through the archives you can see it's been known about and the attitude to it has always been it'll be clear by 2016 / it won't be clear but your still going in the water anyway, deal with it. It's absolutely pathetic how its gone down. Edit: I should point out that I'm not talking about the BBC archives just news sites in general.
That's disgusting. If I was one of the competing athletes, I'd probably refuse to participate.
It's not as much as a Rio problem, but actually a problem everywhere in South America.
There was a thread on here because I posted it but I can't find it now :s:
I remember the old thread too. This news is quite old.
I've read interviews with sailors that have hit human bodies in these waters.
Finding a corpse in the Ganges is a regular thing from what I've heard.
It's not as much as a Rio problem, but actually a problem everywhere in South America.
yes but brazil is easily the worst offender as far as having the capability to change things vs. the amount of work we put towards it goes
i like how 3 teaspoons of water consumption has a 99% chance of getting you infected with something and the IOC still thinks the games are safe enough for people to actually compete in
The question is why they're holding the motherfucking Olympics in a country that's so shitty it can't even keep its water clean
The answer is rather obvious.
Imagine their politicians did a stupid thing like building sewage treatment plants and cleaned up their rivers, instead hosting FIFA world cup and the Olympics.
Imagine their politicians did a stupid thing like building sewage treatment plants and cleaned up their rivers, instead hosting FIFA world cup and the Olympics.
i remember not long ago, the riots of the people there not wanting the games being held there. They wanted their government to build them a better environment and living situation instead.
The question is why they're holding the motherfucking Olympics in a country that's so shitty it can't even keep its water clean
The real question is why do the athletes go along with this bullshit? Why not refuse to participate?
And they gave the winter olympics to a city where it never snows. I have a feeling the IOC and FIFA are one and the same.
And they gave the winter olympics to a city where it never snows.
Wait what
Well, guess they'll have to train harder, since they'll need hazmat scuba diving gear...

I'm curious. Also do they have mutant fish and insects living in the polluted river? I really wonder why Rio doesn't have mutant creatures living in their waters by now.
Brazil is just a shitty polluted country with shitty people and nothing good coming out of it. Why would you even think hosting the Olympics there was good idea?
