• Australia: Same Sex Marriage Bill Introduced -- Liberal National Party 'Chuck A Sickie'.
Bill Shorten has introduced changes to the Marriage Act to parliament that would replace the words "man and a woman" with "two people". Speaking in parliament today, the Leader of the Opposition said the laws of the nation should "give us hope" and "tell our children what we believe". "Changing the marriage act is the next overdue step in the path to true equality." Mr Shorten said the words "the union of a man and a woman" maintained " a fiction that any other relationship is somehow inferior". The bill replaces those words with "the union of two people". The bill will be read to parliament a second time at a later date but without Coalition support, the matter is likely to be adjourned indefinitely. That is pathetic and disgusting.
Just don't even fucking show up, how incredibly childish.
Mr Shorten has conceded that Australia will not have marriage equality until Mr Abbott allows his party colleagues a free vote.
That's bullshit. Why the hell are front seat politicians allowed to strong-arm the people behind them into being ammunition for voting on bills?
I wish they had a rule for something like this where the opposition doesn't show up.
I have never been more absolutely fucking disgusted with my government than now - and they're already pretty god-damn despicable. We're talking about fucking human rights and not a single member of our elected party even bothers to show up and state their case. I can't believe we voted these people in. I can't believe that the place I live in is this awful [editline]1st June 2015[/editline] The labor party has been putting through great policies as opposition, things like making it compulsory to take a basic computer science/logic class for a year or so in primary school and abbott called it 'child labour' while his education minister was doing exactly the same thing with mathematics
I can't believe we voted these people in. I can't believe that the place I live in is this awful
Now let's not go overboard here. Australia is pretty great in comparison to many places, the problem is that the current government is in stagnation with virtually no progress on lots of things.

Australia is pretty great in comparison to many places, the problem is that the current government is in stagnation with virtually no progress on lots of things.
I wasn't saying that the place I live in had awful living conditions or an awful economy, which are generally fine - I'm talking about our human rights record and our policy towards minorities which are really really low among western developed world countries
Shit like this shouldn't be allowed to happen in politics, this is so fucking childish just because one party isn't getting their own way. Fuck this government man.
I really hope they get in trouble for wasting the Oppositions and the Lady's time. This just really makes me feel sick. [editline]1st June 2015[/editline] Should have a 3 strike system, where if they don't show up 3 times they get the boot since THEY OBVIOUSLY DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT OUR COUNTRY TO EVEN TURN UP.
We should have a policy that if a congressional member isn't present during a convening day, any citizen that can prove they live in that district can come sit for them and vote for them. While it might not solve bipartisan stupidity, it would certainly solve this level of childishness.

I would support implementing that policy just to see what would happen
That's a dumb idea, but hypothetically very hilarious. Without a conscience vote there's no way it can pass anyway. Why bother showing up to a bill which won't be passed? But still, Libs should just allow a conscience vote since I'm sure many libs would vote for it to be passed.
Imagine an australian gay wedding You may now mate your mate, mate

They're in a PR crisis. Personally, I hope they vote against it and absolutely fucking no one votes for them at the next election, then we can have gay marriage AND a government that isn't actively running the country into the ground.
In Queensland and South Australia you can still kill a gay person hitting on you and use "gay panic" as a defense against murder charges
It's a shame that the US doesn't do the same where instead of doing it state by state it's simply nationally ruled legal, but at least the US is actually legalizing it
That's bullshit. Why the hell are front seat politicians allowed to strong-arm the people behind them into being ammunition for voting on bills?
There's nothing stopping members of the Liberals or Nationals from crossing the floor. However the reason they don't is because if you disobey your party, your party will be less likely to appoint you to committees or the high-paying Ministerial positions. That makes sense, although Abbott not allowing the conscience vote for this doesn't. They had six years in government from 07 to 13 to pass a bill like this but they didn't, and unlike this government and the Senate the then-Labour government would have easily had it pass the Senate with the support of the Greens, who have marriage reform as party policy.

What a surprise that the LNP were a no show, hell they're so full of themselves on winning the next election yet they do shit like this? Do they think the public won't bat an eye and slam them for this childish behaviour? I mean come the fuck on this is fucking disgraceful and to be quite frank, shouldn't be allowed. I'm surprised Parliament can even be in succession if only 5 MP's rock up from the governing party, whatever I'm fucking furious I'm so thankful my electorate is a Labor safe seat
In Queensland and South Australia
Not surprising

I don't think it's them no-showing because they disagree with gay marriage but because the government wanted this to be gone about in a certain way while Labor is trying to do it in a different way. This is all just a mess for everyone to score political points. The Greens were the first to propose a bill, but then Labor decided to undercut the Greens by putting a bill through with an earlier reading date. The Liberals and Nationals didn't want Labor to have the glory for themselves so then they proposed a way of going about it to undercut Labor's attempts. Also you shouldn't be glad you live in a safe seat, the idea of safe seats is horrible and anti-democratic.
In Queensland and South Australia you can still kill a gay person hitting on you and use "gay panic" as a defense against murder charges
It's an old law that has not been used, Queensland is actually under a Labor government right now so I'm surprised they haven't scrapped the defence yet Might mail my representative and ask if it's on the agenda
And to think that the Australian public thought these guys were better than what we had before...

He helped greatly with getting the commonwealth funds to rebuild the Ipswich Motorway into quite frankly one of the best roads I've driven on now. And he always helps out around the area when Parliament isn't in session so tbh while it is anti-democratic, the man can keep getting elected for all I care

If you are a Nationals supporter here, you haven't had representation in the parliament for around thirty years. About forty-five percent of people who live here lack representation in parliament and that's just disappointing.

http://www.frasercoastchronicle.com.au/news/bi-partisan-support-to-get-rid-of-gay-panic-defenc/2656094/ The last time gay panic was used it was for a murder that took place at St Mary's Catholic in 2008, which was the church that my highschool was affiliated with. Now here's the cool part- Father Paul, the priest at the time, started a campaign to abolish the gay panic defence. But he didn't just stop there, he spent three years learning Italian then went to the Pope by himself and told him face-to-face that the catholic church should stop being anti-homosexual. [editline]1st June 2015[/editline] He's a really nice guy and became a priest after working as a sound technician in a cathedral.
Do you not realize both parties do this all the time ?
Yes and do I support any party doing this, no But LNP is still childish [editline]1st June 2015[/editline] I mean, they are the party where during opposition, three MP's ran out when a division was called over the speaker (?) they've shown they aren't very mature
