Evil Genius Online, the studio announced today, will bring the super-villain sim to Facebook and Zynga as part of a simultaneous launch. The successor to 2004's Evil Genius (pictured) will incorporate social features available on Facebook and Zynga.com, letting players "form evil syndicates, send spies to rival lairs and share rare and crucial items in the form of bribes." Rebellion promises to stay true to the original's simulation aspects and sense of humor, letting players construct underground lairs and command armies of evil minions in their attempts to conquer the world. "As an independent developer, it's crucial that we really explore free-to-play beyond mobile games," Rebellion CEO and creative director Jason Kingsley said in an announcement. "We challenged a small team here in our Oxford studio to create a social game that was not only compelling, but technically impressive and we just kept coming back to Evil Genius — the lair construction, the strategy, the humor — it was just a perfect fit."Rebellion will hold a closed beta of Evil Genius Online this fall. Players interested in honing their super-villain skills can register for the beta, which is limited to 500 participants, through an online survey.
http://www.polygon.com/2013/8/8/4603674/rebellion-bringing-evil-genius-online-for-facebook-and-zynga PETITION FOR EG http://www.change.org/petitions/rebellion-developments-develop-a-full-sequel-to-evil-genius-2
And my excited hopes were crushed with microtransactions.
What a horrible fate for such a beloved game. Goodnight, sweet prince.
No No No... I still play this game on a monthly basis, One of the best games ever imo.
I am genuinely sad about this, evil genius is fantastic and it is well deserving of a propper sequel.
I sent many messages to Rebellion and their CEO on twitter, many times i got replies such as: [t]http://i.imgur.com/gbp423E.png[/t] Even all the way back in October last year: [t]http://www.n1nj4.com/files/twitter2.jpg[/t] And they replied to others with things like: [t]http://i.imgur.com/Mzpdj5l.png[/t] Almost a year later, they finally announced something - and it turns out to be a Facebook game. It suggests they have no idea what people want or what they are doing. No one wanted a social game, people wanted a true sequel to the original. All Rebellion have done is made the majority of fans of Evil Genius very disapointed and annoyed because they hyped up something that turned out to be the complete opposite of what anyone wants. I'd love a new Evil Genius, but at this point i don't think it is likely to happen if this is the sort of thing they think is a good idea. They know people are unhappy with this though, i haven't seen a single good comment anywhere about this. Maybe if enough people complain about it they will realize they should make a proper game.
This is evil genius: online, that doesn't mean that there won't be an evil genius 2
This is evil genius: online, that doesn't mean that there won't be an evil genius 2
It is the game they have been hyping up for the past few months. This is what they have been working on the whole time. This is their sequel to Evil Genius, according to the Polygon article. If they think this is a way to please people who like Evil Genius, then it seems pretty likely they aren't working on anything like a proper sequel. I was told on twitter by Jason Kingsley back in February that it would be a few months until we heard news about Evil Genius, and it turned out to be this.
This is evil genius: online, that doesn't mean that there won't be an evil genius 2
There probably won't. Even with the entire (admitedly niche) fanbase asking for news on a possible sequel, they went ahead and made a social facebook game instead. It'll crash and burn in a couple of months, and they'll think nobody is interested in the IP. Boom, no more chance of a sequel.
nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope nope Evil genious was one of the first games I played and It's in my all time top 5 and THIS is what they do to it!? THE FUCK. I'm out fuck this
If enough people send Twitter messages to Rebellion and Jason Kingsley, maybe they will do something about it. I doubt it though. They know people are unhappy but they haven't said anything about it yet. Their Twitter pages just incase anyone wants to send them a message: https://twitter.com/RebellionJason https://twitter.com/Rebellion Does anyone think it would be a good idea make a petition?
Still can't believe they're doing this. They will royally fuck up this game, by doing like this.
Still can't believe they're doing this. They will royally fuck up this game, by doing like this.
It's already been ruined just by announcing it's a social Facebook game.
maybe they're going to use the money from the facebook game to make a proper sequel? that'd be cool
Those guys are Rebellion are the true evil geniuses here. Hype up sequel to beloved game for months on end, finally release a fucking facebook game with the name slapped on it. So many dreams crushed.
Dear Rebellion, Fuck you ya tossers. Yours truely, Evil Genius Fans
Those games where you create sprites and images on a 2D interface and pay real money to make them build faster and shit - basically the Farmville genre - are the fucking scum and dirt of the games industry. That's what I bet will happen to E.G 2. They exploit children, they're lazy money grabs and they have no commendable and redeeming features at all.
Hopefully they are somewhat smart and just make any paid content cosmetic only like hats for your minions or hats for your traps.
And my hopes of one day an Evil Genius 2 with updated graphics/mechanics will be made are shot down with a missile made out of micro transactions. Ow, my heart.
I've seen a few comments on the Rebellion twitter page where people seem to say stuff like "Glad we're finally getting a sequel to Evil Genius!" and people saying they are excited. The only good comments about this are the ones that don't even seem to realize what it really is...
Zynga are the real evil geniuses
:c
Watch as Zynga force Despicable Me minions into it as a money maker
Fuck this there is no hope for humanity when is the apocalypse to finally end this shit
First The Oregon Trail Facebook game is bought out by a speeddating company, only to completely be wiped off the face of the planet, and now Evil Genius joins the ranks of Zynga's line of money-grubbing social disasters. I'm done with Facebook, fuck this goddamn website and the companies capitalising on it.
Why, why, why?
"As an independent developer, it's crucial that we really explore free-to-play beyond mobile games,"
no, fuck off I hate how that's the to-go thing for everyone nowadays, surpassing both "making a good sequel" and DLC packs
no, fuck off I hate how that's the to-go thing for everyone nowadays, surpassing both "making a good sequel" and DLC packs
I'm fine with Free-to-play games really, just not social or mobile or tablet etc games. It seems like they are holding companies back, they think they HAVE to make them and people actually want them, even though no one really does, like how no one wanted Deus Ex: The fall and instead wanted a full game. They tease and hype these things, and it ends up being something no one likes. That, along with dumbing down games (E.g the new Thief game stops you from jumping unless the game tells to you because it's apparantly immersion breaking) are two of the worst things.

Unfortunately, regardless of their game-making skills, they are really the wrong company for a niche IP like Evil Genius and cannot afford to write-off losses for a true sequel. This is probably the only financially viable route they have for the franchise and it's a damn shame.

There are ways they could of got the money for a sequel, such as Kickstarter. If they really can't afford it and there is no chance, then they shouldn't of let people believe there was a possibility of Evil Genius 2 with all the messages they replied to: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1253816&p=39914746&viewfull=1#post39914746
