hey i have a monitor (max resolution 1440X900) and it has a refresh rate of 60 hertz. Wondering if it was good for gaming, cuz i was thinking about buying a new monitor with 120 hertz.

Get a good CRT, I have an old 22" Sony Trinitron that does 1600x1200 @105hz. It makes me sad that its dying, aka the green shift.
As long as you have a monitor that doesn't have any input lag you're fine.
If you play superfast paced games like Quake or Unreal Tournament then you might see a noticable difference. Otherwise, it's only worth it if you have the money. I personally love my 120Hz LCD.
I guarantee you won't see a difference. To the man above me, it is in your head.

There's a damn difference alright.
There is no difference between a 100hertz screen and a 50 hertz screen save for a bit more fluent motion.
Crt tv's flicker less on higher hertz but lcd tv's do not work that way.
I suspect that this thread will derail into the old "UR EYES CANT SEE MORE THAN XX FPS".
Ontopic: Varies per person, i find 60hz smooth enough, some people see differences between 60 and 75hz.
Smooth enough isn't an answer. The issue is whether or not it can be smoother, not if it's smooth enough.
But arnt 120hz screens made for 3D, so you cant compare 2D and 3D monitors :confused:

I have a 75hz monitor and i can see a difference between 50 and 75 FPS
Anything over 75Hz is a total waste of money.
People disagreeing with me obviously don't know a thing about refresh rate.

Having a higher Hz only really matters on CRT screens which flicker on low settings
Hertz is not FPS people. Not even close.
Especially not on an lcd monitor.
You can see the difference in fps up to 150 vs 200 (differs per person, per colour and per contrast)
Most rts games are fine at 20fps but for Shooters you will notice mouse lag.
60fps on a 50hertz screen is good enough for any gaming situation.

60hz is fine, but there IS a big difference between 60hz and 120hz. A lot of the times 120hz looks unnaturally smooth, to the point where some people have reported motion sickness. once you get used to it though, it's awesome. No gameplay effect though, it's pure aesthetics.

With a 60hz monitor, it can only display 60 frames per second. Your game can get 200fps, but only 60 will be displayed. So Hz and FPS are very similar.

On lcd's images can get updated halfway trough the drawing of it. (ever heard of V-sync?)

Why hasn't anyone mentioned ghosting yet? If the OP's monitor's an old LCD ghosting can be virtually guaranteed. In which case, it would be a horrible monitor for gaming on.

120 hertz monitors are great, you might not see the difference right away, but once you start gaming on it you will be surprised.
