• Why is there a sim slot on netbooks if it doesn't work?

This thread may not have any relevance if you are not in the UK, although I have heard that people around the world have the same problem. On all the latest netbooks there is a little sim slot for mobile phones, which would enable 3G internet on the go, yet the slot has been blocked on most of the computers a select few are unblocked and once the right drivers have been installed it actually works. PS I am not interested in a USB dongle Thanks Facepunch
It's missing the internal hardware. It's for when phone service companies sell netbooks with a 3G Internet service subscription.
Right thanks Van-man so you cant ever get yours working? [editline]11:25AM[/editline] So its not something that will be fully working in 3 months?
You could always go into a mobile phone shop and ask them if they can sell you a 3G subscription.

If it's not blocked, hardware is probably there, so you can just get a SIM card with 3G-only subscription. If it's blocked, there won't probably (99.999999% or something. People aren't retarded and block it for fun) be the hardware.
It's for if you decide to install a WWAN card. Unless the netbook comes with one installed the sim slot will do nothing, manufacturers won't disable a £40 piece of equipment for no reason.
i just found the slot on my 1005HA and its unblocked thanks :buddy:
My Acer Aspire One has a cover on the bottom where the modem would go, it's empty with what looks to be solder pads for a mini PCI-E slot.
