• How is this laptop for this price?

http://ncix.com/products/index.php?sku=59810&vpn=LX.RC402.067&manufacture=Acer#CustomerReviews This is a laptop that might be stocked in store near where I live. If it is it's a huge bonus as getting a credit card I can use to make a purchase that large online is hard work. That in mind, does this look like it's worth the price? I'd mostly be using it for bullshit web surfing and videogames.
Acer, I never recommend them.
Acer = no Asus = Yes http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220866
Acer = no Asus = Yes http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220866
Asus = Anus. My friend has had nothing but problems with the "Republic of Gamers" laptop.
Are you saying ASUS is bad?
Asus = Anus. My friend has had nothing but problems with the "Republic of Gamers" laptop.
Then your friend must be crazy? I have at least 5 friends with Asus laptops that have never had a single issue over years of quality use, and myself I've had an Asus motherboard desktop for over 8 years that's still running fantastic. On the note of laptops, some idiot tripped over my power supply once and smashed the laptop all along a hard floor surface. It suffered no damage physically or electrically. Asus makes quality products.
Acer = no Asus = Yes http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220866
I've heard this like a million times yet I've never had any issue with Acer, ever. Something in a store that I can actually buy = yes Newegg links = no. Like I said in OP I really have no access to a credit card that I can make a $700 purchase on. I really just want to know about the specs here anyways :/ if you guys can find anything else on NCIX that isn't more than like $50 extra I'd be down. [editline]31st March 2011[/editline] Not to mention that asus is $50 more (and this is where I need help from you guys) and it also has 3gb less ram and what looks like an inferior processor. <3 Thanks for the help though.

That aside though, the acer computer looks decent, I'm not sure how their build quality is though as I've never had one myself.
I think I might have to take a gamble on the acer just as I'm pretty limited to getting a computer from a local source and from what I've read the build quality of most laptop manufacturers depends on what line you buy as they often come from different original manufacturers that several of the larger companies share. My girlfriend has an aspire series and it's been solid.
DO odd jobs as a PC repair tech, you will see how shit the laptops can be, everything from cooling to the part "quality", can be/will be below anything you get from HP, Dell, Asus, Lenovo

Mind you this was under warranty. It was an Acer Desktop though.
Asus = Anus. My friend has had nothing but problems with the "Republic of Gamers" laptop.
It's been 2 years and my old M51V still can run Crysis 2 at playable framerates. 9650M GT. Not having a single problem with it. Only heat sometimes can soar up to 78 C if no cooler pad added. Otherwise it's a great laptop. It felled twice and still remains robust as ever with some minor scratches. MSI, Sager or Dell I'd say is still good. But reliability wise, ASUS will be my perfect choice.

Asus does sound like a reputable company. Shows in their prices though. Most of the Asus laptops I've seen, even at like $100 more than that Acer, have smaller HDs, lower res screens, poorer processors, and less ram. Although again I don't know much about computers View YouTUBE video http://youtube.com/watch?v=1eA3XCvrK90 so if there's some Asus lappy hiding on NCIX for a good price like that I'd love to hear about it. [editline]31st March 2011[/editline] like what about this bad boy? I can't tell anything clear from the given specs. processor seems significantly worse though http://ncix.com/products/?sku=58128&vpn=UL80JT-A2&manufacture=ASUS

So the performance may be less for the price, but the reliability and build quality would be better. Don't quote me on that though, I'm not entirely sure.

it's better than the shared gpus that I'm seeing on nearly everything else under $900 :/ so stressful. If the problems with acer were generally screen/keyboard related and I knew I'd just have to sink a hundred bucks into it for repairs a few times I wouldn't really mind, but if the hard drive shits out, I have to pay $200 to fix it, and I lose my computer for a month and a half and all my data permanently (like what happened with the lenovo I'm using now), that's a bigger deal. If it's any use I'll really just be using this for minecraft, gmod, and maybe Starcraft 2 if I get around to buying it.
Acer, I never recommend them.
I always recommend them. I've owned 3 Acer laptops in my life, ranging from mid-range notebooks to high end gaming machines and each one has performed exclusively and very very well. The one thing you must realise when buying an Acer however is that you must buy the hardware, and once you get it, format the ENTIRE drive and put your own OS on there, with your own software to go with it. The bloatware on them is nasty, but if you deal with that, the hardware is incredibly versatile.
Found this Asus at a computer warehouse - http://www.atic.ca/index.php?page=LongDesc&sku=73013 The graphics card is pretty midrange but it's still dedicated and I keep hearing good shit about Asus build quality from you guys.
I've had a bad history with Asus, my EN8800GT died for no reason and the thermal paste was practically glue, I could barely get the heatsink off. I've had to RMA my RoG Crosshair a few times, and I just gave up, but now I needed another new motherboard and I went Asus... it's far better than my old one, even though it's mATX and looks tiny compared to my huge as CPU cooler and HD6850. Either way, their laptops are decent, I have a Sony Vaio myself and I have to say it's damn nice, only had the HD die on me but it was some Hitachi piece of shit. Everything else is super nice. Just go to Best Buy or something and pick up an Asus, Toshiba or Sony. I've used all three and own a Toshiba and Sony laptop, they still work great to this day (and the Toshiba is some 20 year old tank)

If that's fine with you, then get that one. However, the UL series (The other Asus you posted) generally has a good battery life.
I forget that laptops even have batteries half the time. Always plugged in.

And my Acer is perfectly fine.(MINUS THE BARBARIC GPU AND THE FAT32 FORMATTED HARDDRIVE :emo:) [editline]1st April 2011[/editline]
Seems like a fairly good laptop, though from a quick Google search I discovered that the battery life is about 2-3 hours or so. Well it's better to not get an Acer. Only time I'd consider that, an HP, or something would be if it is really cheap/on sale.
There are gonna be 100 people posting: Omg I have an acer and it still works. Congrats you are the 75% of laptops that dont break in the first 3 years. (Including me and my old acer) The point still remains that Acer breaks down more then Asus or sony or whatever.
How about these? I'm probably gonna go for one of them so if anybody reading could just say THAT ONE it'd be a big help: http://www.atic.ca/index.php?page=LongDesc&sku=72078 Lenovo. Intel Core i5-480M 2.66GHz (2.93GHz Turbo) - 6GB (Max 8GB) - 500GB 5400rpm - ATI Radeon HD 5730 1024MB Graphics $872 http://www.atic.ca/index.php?page=LongDesc&sku=73018 Asus. Intel Core i5-460M 2.53GHz (2.8GHz Turbo) - 4GB (Max 8GB) - 500GB 7200rpm - ATI Radeon HD 5470 1024MB Graphics $816 There's another asus identical to the one above with an AMD PhenomII N830 triple core processor, but from what I've googled the intel processor is better and that PC is slightly cheaper. But basically the lenovo has a better processor, better graphics card, but a slower HD. I'm mostly looking for a machine that will play minecraft as well as possible, for reference. [editline]1st April 2011[/editline] Is it possible to upgrade GPUs in laptops (specfically that last Asus?) I love the model, full keyboard, 1600x900, 17.3" screen, but the GPU is pretty shitty compared to a couple of my other options. If I could buy it now and pay for a better GPU later I'd do it in a second but if it's a real difficulty I might go for the lenovo or the earlier Acer w/ the GT 335m GPU.
Acer, I never recommend them.
Neither do I. What's your price range? For 600dollar I would go with this Dell 17" Laptop. http://www.dealstudio.com/searchdeals.php?type=id&q=d238898&ru=28904968 Looks good for me. Hope u find the best bet. Good luck.

Fuck it all, I don't need groceries this month. Going for http://www.atic.ca/index.php?page=LongDesc&sku=73019 Intel Core i7-2630QM 2.0GHz Quad-Core (2.9GHz Turbo) - 4GB (Max 16GB) - 750GB 7200rpm - nVidia GeForce GT 540M Thanks for all your help - w/o you guys I would have just grabbed that acer in OP

(well it very hard and never viable) The difference between the 460 and 480 is minimal. i5 is good enough for annything. I would go for the first asus you posted or the lenovo since they have way better GPU's. Also this might be usefull: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Computer-Games-on-Laptop-Graphic-Cards.13849.0.html
