• $3000 Build Budget - Need opinions on parts
    55 replies, posted
So basically I'm looking to build a gaming PC with a $3000 Budget, and me not being an expert in computers would like some advice/opinions. I have some parts that me and my brother were looking at on Newegg that I'd like you guys to look at and give your opinion on: Power Supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16817139007 MotherBoard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16813128422 Videocard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16814130551 Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16819115211 OS: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16832116718 HD: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16822136313 Memory: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820104168 Massive-Ass Case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16811119160 So help me out and give me a few opinions on these parts. As well as stuff I might be missing, like Disk drives and whatnot. I.E. What to get and what NOT to get. Thanks in advance.
Overpriced harddrive. Look for the spinpoint f3. Sometimes its loud, but its faster and cooler. You should be able to get 2 480s with 3k. Take money off the 12Gb RAM and put it towards a SSD bootdrive. HAF 932 is nowhere near the biggest.
Don't get win7 Pro. Absolute waste of money. Get Home Premium, I doubt you would ever use any of the features in pro or ultimate more than once if at all. And what Hamster said. Also consider a GTX 580, or if you wait, a 595.
OP, what kind of build you looking at? Super mach 800 fast tri-screen computer or humble budget computer? For 3000 you can probably go eyefinity or whatever is the nvidia equivalent. Do you want to save as much as possible or exhaust everything? first post: why does it matter, he has money - he has a bigger budget than axiom. He can probably go with caviar blacks for data, ssd for boot drive. F3s are great hard drives for their value, but the caviar blacks are better albeit more expensive. [editline]27th November 2010[/editline] snip i'm blind as a bat
With that budget, you should definitely consider GTX 580s, or Crossfire 6850 or 6870s.
just get like i7 950 sli gtx 580 1000hx lian-li pc-p50 or if you want size pc-x2000-f asus rampage formula III some 12 gb ram windows and like spend the rest on hard drives [editline]27th November 2010[/editline] if you build this make a build log [editline]27th November 2010[/editline] also op what monitor do you have if it's pretty small you might as well just spend a little less on parts and get a much bigger monitor

[editline]27th November 2010[/editline] Everything else there, is good.

[editline]27th November 2010[/editline] Everything else there, is good.
yeah i put it in there then I realized after drives that might blow the budget [editline]27th November 2010[/editline] so i toned it down a bit
Then I'm not really sure, I've heard the HX1000 is not really recommended nowadays as it's outdated and there are better alternatives.
yeah well i donno he had that originally so i was like whatever [editline]27th November 2010[/editline] he can get the ax but he probably wont' be able to put an as big ssd
Get an Asus/MSI motherboard, get a 1tb Spinpoint F3, drop half the RAM, get Mushkin or Corsair RAM, don't get a factory-overclocked card, get an 80+ GOLD certified PSU and get Windows 7 Home Premium.
Why would he even use 16GB of RAM? Trubritar's not even that insane.
Not even Axiom uses that much.
Not even Axiom uses that much.
Maybe Axoim is Trubritar :ninja:
If you're gonna drop 3k on a PC, at least get an SSD for your OS, music, and movies. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148349
Thank you all! Very helpful advice, I used most of it to revise my build. OK, I have a revised list. In picture form: [img_thumb]http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/7932/computerbuild.jpg[/img_thumb] [sp]I have an LG 1920x1080 Monitor[/sp] And take note I have 2 selections of RAM because I am still deciding on which one to pick.
Wouldn't hurt to throw another HDD in there for extra storage just in case. Also, you have no optical drive. Don't bother with Blu-Ray unless you're sure you'll use it. Something like THIS will do just fine. You also don't have a video card.
Why would he even use 16GB of RAM? Trubritar's not even that insane.
I wasn't implying that he would, it was more factual than anything else.
Why 12gb from one brand and 12gb from another one?
It says it right at the bottom of the post dammit.
I feel like you need to spend more on your hard drives if you're dropping that much cash... Get a 128GB SSD for the OS/basic apps and then get 4 1TB hard drives and put them in raid. Maybe even consider liquid cooling although I personally wouldn't

I have an external Western 2TB. I figured I forgot something, I added in the video card from the OP. Are you sure your going to use all of the features of Windows Home Premium? http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/compare/default.aspx You can drop $100 dollars if you buy the basic version. Also, you really need a graphics card. The hot card right now is the 580, but you might want to wait for a price drop on them, since having two of them in your system cost around $1000. Also, if you want a gaming keyboard and mouse Razer is great from my experience with them. Logitech also has some great mouses and keyboards for gaming as well, but I have never used them... so I only listed Razer. Mouse http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826153056 Keyboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823114011 You might also want to go with a new headset, since you are gaming and hell you have a $3000 budget. Otherwise, he should try both products before deciding. And, given his budget, he could probably afford to do so just like he's doing with his RAM. Also, that 7.1 surround sound headset thing is a joke. Better off with THESE and THIS (insert citation here).
OP, if you're really going for $3000, you may want to put a small bit more into the case and buy the HAF X. It comes with a few things that you'd probably want to add into it anyway like air filters on all the intake fans.
I've added the GTX 480, as I'm waiting for some GTX 580's to come into stock and have a price drop. I'm sure I'll use most of the Home Premium products I'm not quite sure on the case, just something I threw in there to give me an idea on what the budget will be like once I have all the parts. But I'll take a look at the HAF X. And I've tried a variety of Logitech keyboards and mice; I'm currently using a Lycosa Razer keyboard and Deathadder mouse. Both are of good quality. Feel free to give me some links to keyboards and mice you feel are of good quality, always looking for something to improve upon my build. MTMod thanks for the headset link, I will definitely invest in that.
what exactly do you plan to be doing with this computer? gaming? because if so you're overpaying a LOT. you'd be much better off with a $1,200 build than with the monster you're building there. 12GB of RAM will never get used, stick with 4GB, 6 or 8 if you want to push it, but you will NOT see an improvement unless you're doing heavy photoshop work (40+ layers, or massive images with high DPI) or encoding video. for gaming, stick with LGA1156, an i5 750/760 will handle most games perfectly. Games don't benefit from hyperthreading, so the i7 series will not improve your game performance at all. why the GTX 580? just drop a 6870 in there and be done with it, it should be WAY more than enough. why are you getting a 1000W PSU? a 650W is more than enough to power all that shit, even with the 580 in there 700W or 750W will do it, just make sure you buy a reliable brand (corsair is good). if you have money to spare I highly recommend an SSD for your boot drive and another SSD for your games partition, the performance boost in both level loading and general desktop performance will be definitely worth it. honestly, just head over to this SomethingAwful.com thread and give it a good read before you waste your money: http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?threadid=3241890 alternatively, here's a modern build that is actually pretty overkill already: you can save a couple of bucks by dropping the SSDs if you don't feel they are necessary, but they are amazing.
