Syria’s Bashar Ja’afari was elected earlier Thursday to the UN’s Special Committee on Decolonization, which is guided by the principle of “respect for self-determination of all peoples.”
“It is incomprehensible for the UN on one day to lament the Syrian regime’s killing and wounding of hundreds of thousands of Syrians — to declare the regime guilty of a ‘monstrous campaign of annihilation’ of its own people — and to then hand this gift of false legitimacy to the mass murderer Bashar al-Assad,” said Hillel Neuer, executive director of the Geneva-based human rights group UN Watch.
Why does the UN keep doing this?
I guess the UN doesn't want to be taken seriously anymore, they keep doing appointments that look like Donald Trump himself selected the appointees.
Unsurprisingly it's a pretty sensationalist headline.
He's been there since 2006 and is only the guy reports on the proceedings of its meetings.

Kinda like Al Jazeera, sources form Israel should be double checked, even if they pass media fact check.
UN is a patchwork organization of 190+ governments across the globe with equal votes but wildly different agendas. It really doesn't have internal consistency among many of its committees, forums, and assemblies. And then traversies like these happen.
At least we can talk more about what is happening in Eastern Ghouta now.
Here is a map of the members and observers of this committee. (Darrk, Bright, in order.)

its rather funny Russia is on this committee on decolonialization to be honest. The USSR was pretty much an empire made up of protectorates and vassel states and the Russian Empire before it had their own fling with colonialism, which till today has also lead to a myth that alaska was a lease not a purchase

Reminds me of how the Dutch bought New York City from the Native Americans, and apparently trade with Native Americans is lease only, but it's actually true. Obviously that's false with Russia. Apparently there were so many US settlers moving in by that point that it was essentially US-owned anyway.

From your own link:
Acting by acclamation, the Committee also elected three Vice-Chairs — Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo (Cuba), Dian Triansyah Djani (Indonesia) and Adikalie Foday Sumah (Sierra Leone) — for its 2017 session, as well as Bashar Ja'afari (Syria) as Rapporteur.
UN Watch is protesting the appointment of the Syrian UN envoy to a senior post in the committee.

The Special Committee on Decolonization has always been a joke, it keeps trying to get independence for places that don't want it.
the thing about the UN is that its essentially the legion of doom AND the superfriends under one roof so you do end up with committees that are pretty useful and others that are just absolute jokes
