Donald Trump has said a "big day" is planned on national security, including an announcement to build a wall on the border between the US and Mexico.
The new US president is expected to sign several executive orders regarding immigration and border security over the next few days.
They are likely to include the "extreme vetting" of people coming from seven predominantly Muslim countries in the Middle East and Africa.
This would restrict refugee access.
Mr Trump tweeted: "Big day planned on national security tomorrow. Among many other things, we will build the wall!"
Building a 2,000-mile wall along the Mexican border was one of his key proposals during the presidential election campaign.
During his election campaign, Mr Trump said Mexico would pay for the wall, which he said would cost about $8bn (£6.4bn).
He has since said the US would recoup the costs from its neighbour at a later date.
But Mexico's president and senior officials have said that they will not pay for the wall, despite Mr Trump's campaign pledge.
There will also be measures that force so-called sanctuary cities in the US to co-operate with the authorities on deporting illegal immigrants.
"Sanctuary cities" are places that don't arrest or detain immigrants living in the country illegally.
Later this week, Mr Trump is expected to announce immigration restrictions from seven African and Middle Eastern countries, including Syria, Yemen, and Iraq.
He is also likely to halt access to the country for some refugees - until the vetting process can be made more rigorous.
The BBC's David Willis in Washington says immigration and humanitarian organisations are likely to be outraged by the measures.
He's actually doing it the absolute madman.
... may god help us all.
and i'm the king of the moon
hey at least he's keeping to his promises, right?
fuckin' hell I really want these 4 years to fly by so this shitbird can get out of office. if only he could put as much effort into benefiting this country, rather than harm it like he currently is doing.
Forcing sanctuary cities into cooperating with the authorities without prior reason to suspect an immigrant, illegal or otherwise, might be a threat or has broken the law, is utter bullshit.
Meanwhile, the Dutch government has said it will set up an international fund to counter the effects of Mr Trump's ban on US funding for abortions in developing countries.
The Dutch development minister, Lilianne Ploumen, said withdrawing funding would not result in fewer abortions, but would increase dangerous abortion practices and cause more maternal deaths.
Can't wait for Trump to try and stop funding from sources like this reaching the places it's supposed to go as well :downs:

At that point he has kind of achieved his goal by making other governments foot the bill.

Are you being serious? A normal person's definition of America for Americans means spending money to take care of fellow Americans instead of spending it on some hunk of junk wall that will cost between 10-25 billion dollars. The interest from this money alone could be more than enough to address serious societal issues such as the healthcare problem and the lack of funding for schools and colleges. A clever politician would realize this and use the money for this purpose instead, thus winning approval cutting across party and class lines. But since we're talking about the human orange, that's not going to be even a remote possibility. A disadvantage, to note, about supporting a populist demagogue.
Blaming the immigrants for America's problems won't get Trump or his supporters anywhere except gain more anger from those Americans he already alienated.
the wall is just a metaphor u guys
It honestly shocks me that he's talking about a literal border wall rather than a metaphorical one, and it shocks me even more that a lot of people are supporting him on that. I thought that most illegal immigrants in America are there because they overstayed their visas? And even with the whole drug smuggling business, how hard could it be for someone to catapult something over a wall, for someone on the other side to pick it up?
i know right?? i thought it was a metaphor but then i realized something's fucked UP

Some bright bulbs think the entire wall (which they still believe is going to look like the Great Wall of China rather than a chain link fence) should be manned by snipers so that any illegals get shot, according to what one of them told me in an off-site conversation. Some of them also believe that minefields should be laid near the wall too. :downs:

It was reference to the Dutch government quote, it already has happened.
Doesn't he have to get the money from congress first to even start? Dems are probably going to fight tooth and nail against any proposal with the wall in it.

Yeah, he's going to have to get the money from congress, but barring a filibuster from the dems for as long as possible, he's going to get the money eventually with the republican majority.

Depending on how much bad press it gets and how much it costs the Republicans may force him to settle on a less literal wall, like just an "electronic fence" or increase border personnel. There are fiscally conservative Republicans that may have a heart attack if they see it costs too much and their majority in the Senate is slim enough they may have to compromise. But maybe this is all wishful thinking. At the very least if it gets "funded" we get to watch the cost be severely underestimated and slowly turn into a massive disaster as it starts to go increasingly over budget and becomes subject to a shitload of protests.

Well, that depends on how much will be too much for them to prevent this support. Estimates range anywhere between 10 to 25 billion dollars, never mind forcing Mexico to pay all this money to the USA after the wall is finished (the mexican president basically told Trump to fuck off and he'd never pay a cent)
the wall is just a metaphor u guys
I remember a few months ago a thread where everyone came out and said "of course it was metaphorical all along, you guys are so stupid for taking him literally, I knew all along". Sure, the wall doesn't exist yet, but let's see how metaphorical he wants it to be.

He ain't making it 4 years.
When you pull Calligula shit like this, don't be surprised when you're impeached or wake up to find an amateur Jackson Pollack painting composed of your own gray matter and fragments of your skull.
you would probably get less immigration if you spent all that money on helping mexicans.
Exactly this. Trump's plan to withdraw aid funding from Mexico will make the problems that lead to high immigration rates, human trafficking, and the smuggling of drugs and weaponry exponentially worse, and his wall will do fuck-all to stop those issues from spilling over into the US. What's more, the money saved in aid spending and/or gained from tairifs won't even scratch the surface of the long-term construction, maintenance, and staffing costs of a wall.
The wall isn't going to happen.
I'm not saying they wont try to build one, but Trump has 4 years at the reigns, 8 at the absolute maximum (if this timeline really is doomed).
He just doesn't have the time. Best case scenario for Trump and friends? they waste a ridiculous amount of money hauling all of the materials out to the border, and laying the very foundations of their retarded fucking wall- only for the next president to go "lol no" and immediately abandon the project.
Even if things go totally fucking mental and you somehow manage to elect several consecutive presidents dumb enough to continue building the thing, and even if they were to complete it, eventually someone with half a brain is going to look at the maintenance costs vs actual benefits, and leave the thing to crumble.
The wall being left decaying and incomplete would be an incredibly fitting monument. A warning for future generations about the danger of falling for the bullshit of politicians like Trump.

Big words for a minister who is most likely only going to be in charge for just one and a half months more, given how the party she is representing is projected to lose around 75% of their seat total in the next elections. And given how long this Dutch cabinet has stalled on many other issues, I would be surprised if they can suddenly can set up an international fund so that the Dutch can pay yet again for other countries without the Dutch population itself getting a say in the matter.

Did you ever read about the Big Dig in Boston?
A large-scale project that was supposed to cost $2.8 billion and take 7 years ended up being more than $22 billion and 15 years. Despite that it was supposed to be a relatively straight-forward construction of a few more highways and tunnels, everything that could have gone wrong, did.
This is the vibe I'm getting from Trump's wall. No way a project both as big as this and as controversial will continue off without a hitch. It'll cost between $10-25 in a best case scenario, but honestly, I think that even if it gets approved and construction begins, it will never actually be finished.

Yup they said it. Not even trumps supporters know trumps platform. I wonder, does trump even know his own platform? Is he stricken with some illness where he says silly shit then, to save face and avoid embarrassment, has to double down on it - while not actually believing it. Someday it'll all catch up, the facade will crumble and everyone, including himself, will realise he chats shit.
Has there ever been a case where some huge construction project didn't run horribly over budget?
