Say bye to the Big Bad Wolf.
Busch Gardens Williamsburg announced today that, after 25 years zipping through an artificial Bavarian village, the theme park’s suspended roller coaster will be closed Sept. 7.
“We realize the Big Bad Wolf is a guest favorite,” park general manager John Reilly said in a statement. “We’re making the announcement now so coaster fans can ride one last time before it closes after Labor Day.”
The Big Bad Wolf was ahead of its time in 1984 when it opened as the world’s first suspended roller coaster, and it has attracted more than 29 million riders, according to the Busch Gardens statement.
“While it remains a safe attraction, it has simply reached the end of its service life,” Larry Giles, Busch Gardens’ vice president of engineering and design, said in the statement.
Park officials are reviewing concepts for an attraction to replace the Big Bad Wolf, but no announcement is planned, they say.

I went to Busch Gardens once. I didn't ride that one. I wish I had now.
I lived right next to bush gardens, and I never even fucking went to it.

dumber
I've been on that roller coaster, it was cool.
Never heard of it, but sounds fun.
Dang. I live like an hour away from that park. I used to go all the time.
Big Bad Wolf was the first coaster I ever rode, years ago. I'll miss it. That last drop, where it felt like you were just about to hit the water before it pulled away, was awesome, even though it wasn't that high for a coaster.
I rode it once. It didn't go very fast but it went over some water and trees.the ambiance of the ride was good. its sad but its probably a good idea to close it after 25 years. don't want the darn thing to fly off the tracks.
I don't get it.
If it has never had any big breakdowns, why not just schedule regular inspection and maintenance?
I'm pretty sure it can easily be kept safe. And I mean, it's freaking METAL. Not wood. It's not like it could really rot off or anything...
Dammit that was my favorite ride there.
I'll huff and puff and blow your roller coaster down.

Rust. And Arrow coasters are really rough after a while... *COUGH*
I went on this ride when I was there. It wasn't my favorite out of all the rollercoasters there but I liked the feeling that I was going to crash.
Not a bad ride either.
Isn't this that theme park near Gilroy?

Haha
That building was constructed with the cracks already on the walls.

These irrelevant comments. I don't even find it funny.

I came off that ride with massive head ache
There has yet to be a roller coaster that has scared me.
I wish people would start building good roller coasters.

Metal fatigue. Rust. Repairs to the associated buildings.
Also, that ride has the longest, slowest line in the whole park. When the place is loaded, it takes an hour and a half of waiting in line to ride it. Other coasters in the park are far faster. Even Alpengeist, the one with the most traffic, rarely takes more than 45 minutes. They're probably doing this less for safety, more to replace it with something better.
I loved that ride, Apollo's Chariot was my favorite one there, but Big Bad Wolf was really fun too. It was the only one I could ever get my mom to go on come to think of it.

My guess is the reason it's being closed down is metal fatigue, this is when you bend a piece of metal back and forth until it snaps. They'd have to completely rebuild the ride, but they'll no doubt replace it with something new.
But in a 25 year service even the best steel available is going to be riddled with fatigue when you consider the forces involved with the ride.
I live like 15min away from the Tampa, Florida Bush gardens. Never been on any of the roller coasters there.

X and X2 are alright, but they didn't scare me. And it's too short.
