• MercurySteam: Days of 2D Castlevania games “gone”
Having worked as producer across Lords of Shadow and its sequel, as well as Mirror of Fate which serves to bridge them, producer David Cox has indicated that the days of traditional 2D Castlevania titles are “gone.” That is largely due to Konami’s desire for the series to become mainstream once again, with Cox discussing his belief that the move to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One means that there’s expectation “for big, epic games.” “I think those days [of 2D Castlevania games] are gone, yes. I think hardcore gamers would love to play another 2D Castlevania, but the reality is that it’s a very niche market and Konami really want this series to be mainstream again,” Cox explained. He continued, “We took this direction in order to reach that bigger audience, otherwise we would have carried on with the 2D approach. That’s not to say I don’t think there will ever be another 2D game in the series, it might happen but just not from MercurySteam. “When you look at the future on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, I don’t think people want to play 2D games on those consoles. Core gamers may still want something like that, but there’s an expectation among the wider public for big, epic games.”
http://www.nintendo-insider.com/2014/02/24/mercurysteam-days-2d-castlevania-games-gone/ Castlevania fans knew this already but it sucks seeing it acknowledged. We will never have that 1999 Castlevania game people have dreamt would one day come.
No more Metroidvania or Classicvania? Fuck this gay Earth. I liked Lords of Shadow a lot but come on.
The most painful part of the article is "Core gamers may still want something like that, but there’s an expectation among the wider public for big, epic games." Basically since money means everything, the chance is pretty much less than zero
No more Metroidvania or Classicvania? Fuck this gay Earth. However, just glance at the indie market to find a massive amount of metroidvania games.
What I don't understand is what's going to happen after Lords of Shadow 2. You can't just reboot a series then say, "nah reboot's over, back to the old series now." Are they going to reboot it again, or what? As far as I'm concerned the first Lords of Shadow is a lot better than it's reputation implies and if Lords of Shadow 2 manages to convert the mechanics of the first game to a metroidvania structure well, then I'll be more than happy.
Aw man, I was kinda hoping for maybe one more Classicvania. I mean I like Lords of Shadow but I love my 2D platforming Castlevanias even more.
good thing la mulana 2 was funded
It does say that Konami want the castlevania games to be mainstream again so they probably would rather big games like lords of shadow because lets face it they'll sell more in the current game market than another 2d castlevania.
God damn what the fuck this makes me so irritated Who made them in charge of mirror of fate that's what killed 2Dvania games. The portable titles were absolutely amazing why mercury storm This is seriously so stupid omg
No more Metroidvania or Classicvania? Fuck this gay Earth. I liked Lords of Shadow a lot but come on.
If you want a good Metroidvania game, try the new Strider. Seriously, it's fucking amazing.
Speaking of Lords of Shadow... is Hideo Kojima going to be involved with the sequel?
Not from AAA publishers, unless Nintendo finally makes an announcement on their next metroid game. However, just glance at the indie market to find a massive amount of metroidvania games.
almost all of them are not that great though
If you want a good Metroidvania game, try the new Strider. Seriously, it's fucking amazing.
But the problem with that is that it's Strider and not Castlevania.
But the problem with that is that it's Strider and not Castlevania.
Are there any metroidvanias that are exactly like the SotN style Castlevanias? Almost all the Metroidvanias out there have the side scrolling but not the RPG elements.
Well can the days of sucky Castlevania games be gone too? I haven't played a decent one since SotN and Castlevania 64.
I don't understand why it has to be a 2D sidescroller to be a metroidvania. Metroid Prime, Arkham Asylum and Dark Souls all showed that the metroidvania structure works in 3D, but do they just not count because they're 3D?
Are there any metroidvanias that are exactly like the SotN style Castlevanias? Dust: An Elysian Tail is more like Muramasa: The Demon Blade, but that falls more on the vania side of metroidvania in the first place anyway.
That's fine, just make a 3d classicvania style game. You know, a very difficult game that has varying enemy patterns, rewards patience, has meticulously designed levels with very specific enemy and item placement. A somewhat limited movement also requires you to be accurate and sure of your decisions when fighting enemies. You know maybe add some RPG elements that are similar to the metroidvania style games as well. Oh wait, they already did it. It's called Dark Souls.
I think it'd be a better idea to continue the 2D stuff on handheld or 3DS. Lower development costs and a potentially higher return. Even if it were a small, Classicvania-style digital download it could work. They want their Battlefields and Calls of Duty and they can't compete with that. Those core Castlevania fans however, the people who would be the primary market for Castlevania games...still want classic Castlevania games.
Should Konami care what Mercury Steam has to say since LOS2 ended up sucking complete ass and proved that they're shitty developers?
Should Konami care what Mercury Steam has to say since LOS2 ended up sucking complete ass and proved that they're shitty developers?
I don't see reviews of it anywhere
I would like to see another fps Metroid game on the Wii U with HD graphics and hopefully better controls, but would like to see a classic side scroller on the 3DS as well. [editline]25th February 2014[/editline] I'd like to see any AAA developer make a sidescroller metroidvania game, it doesn't have to be 2D graphics, just on a sidescrolling 2D plane.
Omg Konami get the DS team back together and make another 2D game holy shif!!!!!!! We don't need mercury storm to make one they don't know what they are doing in that regard !!!!!!!
God damn what the fuck this makes me so irritated Who made them in charge of mirror of fate that's what killed 2Dvania games. The portable titles were absolutely amazing why mercury storm This is seriously so stupid omg
Ya its not like the 2D castlevanias were some shitty games. Most are fucking amazing games, as far back as 1 all the way to the recent 2D release they have been mostly great with a few hiccups. Like the only real shit 2D castlevania is 2. The non japansese Rondo of Blood was pretty bad as well since it was like not even close to what the real Rondo of Blood was.
I just want more portable ones, the three titles on the DS are so awesome and you could literally do another sprite repaste and have some new levels and I would be so excited
You guys should check out UnEpic on steam it's pretty awesome. Also, it seems like it would be a lot cheaper to make a 2D game than a "big epic game" I'm sure that enough people would buy it to make it worth making... put it on 3DS and help out nintendo
Castlevania's my favorite game series, and I still play the games regularly. As long as Konami gets Iga working with Castlevania again I'm sure they'll do another 2D game, since he prefers making those over 3D ones. I just hope they realize the low sales are because of the DS exclusives I'd hate to see this series die, there's a certain charm about the 2D gameplay and art style with Michiru Yamane's music.
I dig the Metroidvania genre so I'm cool with playing other games in it but I like Castlevania itself because I dig the horror aesthetic and the music a whole lot. It's a shame we're not going to get that anymore.
well that's another studio closin' down
