A 21-year-old West Michigan woman who was caught on camera trying to hire a hit man to kill her husband has been sentenced to a minimum of 5 years, 8 months behind bars.

The Muskegon woman pleaded guilty to soliciting the murder of her 27-year-old husband.
On a hidden camera video made by investigators, Merfeld is heard telling a detective posing as a hit man that the killing would be “easier than divorcing him.”
Authorities say Merfeld wanted her husband’s $400,000 life insurance policy and was videotaped in April promising to pay $50,000 for the killing.

“When I first decided to do this, it’s not that we weren’t getting along. I mean, I was just, it was easier than — as terrible as it sounds — it was easier than divorcing him,” Merfeld said. “You know, I didn’t have to worry about the judgment of my family, I didn’t have to worry about breaking his heart; all that stuff like this. It’s, like, how I got a clean getaway.”

Merfeld told the undercover cop it would be best if he fatally shoot her husband, who is the father of her two children,
“If you can get him outside, that would be great… It would be messy in the house,” she said with a laugh. “Surprise me with how you do it because, I mean, the more shocked I am when it happens, the better it will be. I just want to make it as non-suspicious as possible,” Merfeld added.
The uncover officer is heard warning her that there will be no calling it off. “There’s no way he’s gonna live; I mean, he’s gonna die,” says the detective, while Merfeld smiles.
Investigators say they were tipped off about the whole situation by one of Merfeld’s co-workers whom she initially approached to get the job done.
That same co-worker told reporters he was surprised by her Merfeld’s request, because she seemed to be a good mother to her kids and he never mentioned she was unhappy in her marriage, prior to that day.
Merfeld asked the judge Tuesday for a lighter punishment.
This is an update to this story. The sentencing was way too lenient.
See what happens when you get impatient and try to take shortcuts? Didn't TV teach you anything, lady?
"how i got a clean getaway"
haha ok bitch
What an insufferable cunt.
She seemed dumb more than anything in that clip, not cruel. But I suppose being dumb enough not to realise your cruelty is worse.
A minimum of five years is still way too short for something like this.

haha yeah dude she's not "cruel" or anything she's just dumb!! :P what a silly-billy woman, hehe!
I wonder how long the sentence would be if it were the other way around.

If the hitman you're hiring starts trying to reason with you and saying the job repeatedly just so you know what you're doing, pretend it was all a joke and get the fuck out of there

Not sympathising with her, the bitch deserves a longer sentence, IMO. But she didn't seem like a sadistic person in personality; is what I meant. I mean she's laughing and talking as if she was with a friend not murdering her husband. Cruelty is usually implied out of anger or dominance or similar such emotions, not "haha im just going to kill my husband bcuz y not."
5 years is too short for conspiring to have someone murdered, imo.
Christ, if you're looking for someone to commit murder you don't just go into work and ask around. What the fuck.
Maybe her and tim lambesis can start up a prison duet

Life or capital punishment in the U.S
Man should not divorce her after this, just to spite her :v: .
I can't help but compare this to the league kid that got 8 years (yeah, i know it was thrown out later, but still). It's ridiculous that people "go easy" on people like this, usually attempted murder is 10-15 years and that's essentially what the plan was.

Naw, divorce her now while the divorce court has sympathy for the guy. See how much he can keep, try to tip the scales from 50/50.

And just openly sleep with other women the whoooooole time she's in jail. You're free to be the town saddle, dude, just buy lots of condoms.

Five years is a long time to learn why it was a stupid thing to do. I'd be surprised if she didn't honestly regret her actions by the time she's out.

Regret getting caught, maybe.
I was so glad when I saw the original video, just knowing she was talking to the cops the whole time with her shit eating grin. I wish they would have went through the same deal they did with that one woman a while back where they pretended her husband actually got murdered. Just to add to the embarrassment.

Oh, it's like a sitcom, it writes itself.
"Honey, I'm home!"
"What?!"
*'Hitman' walks in behind him, flashes badge*
:v:
and then she gets out of jail in 5 years and sends a hitman to kill her husband but this time she succeeds

And you think the cops wouldn't make a beeline for her if he turned up dead shortly after she got out?
He should divorce her, and she won't get anything. All he has to say is "This bitch tried to kill me for my money"

He actually forgave her and testified for the defense during the trial.
