I just bought a new computer, but it doesnt have any anti-virus protection, and im really terrible at the stuff so I have no idea which ones are trustworthy and protects my computer well.
Just wondering if you got any suggestions to which I should install?
I like how we have a thread about the same exact thing every week.
Anyway, Microsoft Security Essentials.
I usually recommend Comodo, because of it's sandbox and paranoid levels of security.
Not exactly gamer-friendly though, and need to be fully deactivated to play certain games. (Disabling everything isn't enough)
MSE, Avast! and Comodo are great, take your pick
MSE is basic protection but it usually stops stuff pretty well
Avas- VIRUS DATABASE HAS BEEN UPDATED... Excuse me, Avast! has a boot scan function which helped clean out my mom's desktop. I know other AVs have them but for some reason I hear a lot of people praise Avast!'s boot scan, it's detection and block rates are pretty great as well
I don't know much about Comodo
Always have Malwarebytes though as a backup in case something does get through
Webroot is good, costs like $20, but it works great.

Gotta love playing loud music when sudde--:siren:A VIRUS HAS BEEN DETECTED:siren:
FYI: for all you guys having a problem with loud sounds on Avast! turn on silent mode.
I'm using Avast! after a virus managed to destroy Microsoft Security Essentials, gotta admit it made me jump first time it spoke (full volume didn't help either).
Someones got to say it: Common Sense 2011
eg. Not downloading
STEAM_GAME_UNLOCKER.EXE
In all seriousness I'd reccomend comodo
There's probably thousands of threads about this. I haven't used an antivirus for 2 years.

Because he probably thinks he is too smart for them there viruses.
Personaly, i have always used Avast!, i love the GUI and it just works great, with features that are acually helpfull. The older versions would constanty go VIRUS DATABASE HAS BEEN UPDATED.
and make you nearly shit yourself everytime. Especially when you're playing Doom 3 at 2:00 AM, and you turn your volume up to try and hear that whispering behind the wall. but the new voice isn't loud at all, and can even be turned off.

The only way anyone with a bit of common sense is going to get a virus is through a drive-by or similar exploit, and they can easily be cleaned up retroactively.
If malware were like it used to be and was actually destructive, it would be worth running anti-virus software.
As it stands, Malwarebytes scheduled to run daily is enough for me.

First thing I do when I install Avast on a customer's computer is turn off the sound... even before I register it.
Avast! Home edition is nice and free, I've recently switched to AVG just cause for some reason Avast has been slowing down my games.
If some extra money lying around (~$40 USD) NOD32 is pretty good.
MSE or AVG for passive protection, MBAM for scanning.

Choo choo here comes the drive-by Java exploit.
Boom and you're fucked, and you won't even know it.
