Does the military actually use fancy crossbows at all in the field?

I can see this being some sort of improvised crossbow because the US/Russian troops are left inside an eathquake zone withoud outside support.

That's a pretty fresh concept, I'll admit.
Looking forward to this one.

No. Crossbows have the following disadvantages:
-Slow to reload, making suppressing fire impossible
-Can't penetrate armor
-Has very little stopping power
-Very short lethal range, most hunting crossbows only have a lethal range of 90 feet. Most firearms have an effective range of >200 meters, which is ~650 feet.
-It would be very difficult to kill someone wearing a kevlar vest (keep in mind a bolt has a much larget surface area vs a bullet), and next to impossible to kill someone wearing a kevlar + ceramic hybrid vest.
The only thing that excites me to purchase this and get back into playing Battlefield 3 is the scavenge gamemode.
Looks really out of place in a Battlefield game.

Except that a modern hunting crossbow is probably able to shoot through a kevlar vest pretty easily, because a bolt's penetration characteristics differ from a bullet greatly. Not too sure about trauma plates though.
I really dislike the whole gimmick of crossbows/bows in military shooters though, apart from BF2 Special Forces where it was an awesome zipline.
Hell yeah, we need an expansion with ziplines and grapple hooks Ilrath
According to the BTS of COD Black Ops 1, they used Crossbows in Black Operations IRL, because they're silent.
But in the middle of a battle? I don't think so.

Well thats another expansion I won't be buying.

I'm personally not buying any expansions and hoping I can pick up Premium on the cheap later on.
I'd like more verticality in the maps. Medium sized urban maps like Grand Bazaar work pretty well in BF3 so I hope this expansion will bring more of those to the table.
What's with the arrow fetish in recent games, seriously

You can retrieve the bolt for near infinite ammo though.

Oh okay thanks I was just thinking to myself "is Trunk Monkay going to buy this"?

Which is still stupid seeing as they had magical explosive crossbow bolts for that crossbow.

Run into a warzone to grab a bolt that has a decent chance of being broken or bent?
this game sure does have a lot of DLC

They always had sunglasses. They just removed the helmet.
This isn't the first time crossbows were in BF. BF2 special forces had then.

Weren't they used to fire ziplines?

This is just a thought I've had kicking around: trends and creative influence are only something to be ashamed of if it's clear the developers didn't think about how to make a feature work in their own game and the result isn't fun to play with. As someone who bought Premium and only sightly regrets doing so, it doesn't matter where the idea for a scoped crossbow that can fire explosive bolts came from, so long as it lets me re-enact scenes from Platoon and Rambo with unsuspecting players in a satisfying manner.

but it was a compound bow in rambo (and you can do that in minecraft)

I'll try not to let that bother me when I'm hunting Russians on Caspian.

Good luck with that.
Kinda want to try this but I'm not sure considering how awful the map designs in vanilla are.
Man, EA really love crossbows, huh? This is weird. Fair play for trying out something new though.
