The progressive Pullen Memorial Baptist Church in Raleigh, North Carolina, has said it will not be holding marriages for anyone until the state legalises same-sex unions.
The Raleigh Observer reports that the congregation voted in favour of the move on Sunday.
They agreed blessings for relationships will still be held, but no official weddings will take place.
The congregants said North Carolina is discriminating against its gay couples “by denying them the rights and privileges enjoyed by heterosexual married couples.”
The church’ statement said: “As people of faith, affirming the Christian teaching that before God all people are equal, we will no longer participate in this discrimination.”
In September, North Carolina’s House of Representatives approved plans for a voter referendum on a gay marriage ban.
Although the state does not recognise gay marriage, the move would enact a constitutional ban on the practice, which would prevent the courts from ruling for marriage equality.
This month, a Democrat sitting in the state’s House of Representatives defended her statement that there was a “special place in hell” for the Republicans who approved the referendum.
The Pullen Memorial Baptist Church has taken action against perceived social injustices since the 1950s. First opposing racial segregation and welcoming black people into the congregation, it later spoke out against the Vietnam War.
The church was critical of the nuclear arms race and the more recent invasion of Iraq.
In 1992 it officially endorsed full involvement of its gay followers. [/release]
This is pretty nice. Finally some people are getting their heads out of the sand...
Wonder what Fox News will say about this, though?

The Church of Satan

Heh.
"BREAKING NEWS: SATANIC CHURCH HOLDS STRAIGHT COUPLES HOSTAGE!"
Wow....
just wow....
I am amazed
It's great to see Christians that actually support gay marriage actually speak out and do something, we need more of these people to speak out to balance out the ones who want to murder all gays.

Probably some ironic shit about separation of church and state
It's these small things that cause big changes.
I hope so, at least.
Never thought i'd see the day a baptist church comes out and advocates gay marriage.
It's just something that would take someone completely by surprise.
Still, i only think they're hurting themselves with this one. Think of all the money they'll lose.
Wait so my state isn't completely worthless?
That has got to be one of the best churches I've heard of. Kudos for doing what they did.
it's nice when you see christians actually embrace the best teachings from jesus
Every fucking credit, good to see them all stand up for this.
Good on them, this is what I like to hear - the level-headed majority of christians actually standing up and doing something, to oppose the view that they're all crazy fundemantalists given by a hardline minority.
These are the types of Christians I actually like

How disgustingly biased and conservative

And ignore the rest of the bible.
And ignore the rest of the bible.
So nothing new?
So nothing new?
I guess so
And ignore the rest of the bible.
I'm guessing you're against this? So would you like to quote the part of the bible where it says you should hate gay people, as in, a part of the bible that's actually getting used fully this day.
Dude, way to fucking go!
Nothing in the New Testament actually condemns homosexuality. Only the Old Testament condemns homosexuality, in the Book of Laws, which Christians do not follow. Christians who listen to the Book of Laws and attempt to practice their teachings are incorrectly interpreting the Bible.
The closest Christianity has to homosexual condemnation is the writings of St. Paul, and even then he simply states that homosexuals will not gain entrance into heaven.
In the end Christians will ultimately accept the equality of homosexuals with heterosexuals. Just as Christians accepted the equality of women with men.

Romans 1:27 seems rather anti gay.

That depends on the interpretation.
One theological theory is that, to go against one's natural sexual orientation is sinful. Which means, a gay man who tries to be straight is in-fact sinning.

What about 1 Corinthians 6:9-10?
What about 1 Corinthians 6:9-10?

1 Corinthians 6:9 The words men who have sex with men translate two Greek words that refer to the passive and active participants in homosexual acts.
The actual, original interpretation is passive sex. Which is sinful regardless of the sexual orientation. This makes sense, seeing the context of the passage is about "abusing" sexuality.

I'm pretty sure it means any man who has sex with another man, not necessarily a homosexual of course.

That's like saying Genesis must be referring to the modern calender because of its use of "Days," when in-fact the original Hebrew writings were meant as "times."

Not really, the hebrew word yom simply means a period of time, however men who lie with men is fairly clear.
The King James version also states "effeminate," which was intended as a translation for the Greek term "soft," which had two connotations (morally soft or woman-like, could be interpreted either way) and doesn't even explicitly mention homosexuality. One of the problems with Biblical theology is that each version has different wording.
It's about fucking time. Kudos to the Church
