A while ago I set up a 4 speaker sound system around my computer, and it seemed to work fine. When I got in-game, though, I realized that I couldn't hear any characters talking behind me.
I can hear other sounds, I can't quite distinguish exactly what, but I know I can hear out of the rear speakers at all. I HAVE set the Speaker count in the audio options to 4/5.1 (whichever the game has) and my audio driver option is set to 4. The speakers, though, aren't exactly made for 2+ setups, but it seems to work just fine, my motherboard has a port for each set (front, rear, side, etc.); voices seem to be the only problem. If it helps:

Rear speakers:

OS: XP pro, SP3
Any help?
It might be a problem with the game. Certain games, for example, HL2, have louder voices for some reason when you turn your head ingame to the side of the person speaking and look at something else.

Unless you've tried multiple games and got the same result, in which case, I'm not sure what the problem is. Is the setup hooked up right? Sometimes certain plug-ins put out sound but they aren't actually where it's supposed to go.
Yeah, but this isn't that they just get quiet when behind me, they literally don't make any sound. Although it does fade into nothing as I turn.
Do the speakers work outside of games? Like if you do that speaker test thing do they work?
Yes, completely. for music, videos, tests, etc.
I think it's because you have two different speakers instead of a 4 speaker system. At least by the looks of those links (:siren:) anyway.

Seriously, could no one think of that? You can't just put two 2.1 systems together hoping to get 4.2. Buy an actual 4.1 system. Or 5.1, I don't think they make 4.1.

Oh, but I still think two different kinds of speakers wouldn't work. Even if it's two of the same 2.1 systems. The mobo has that kind of port for 5.1 systems.
Yeah, I know they aren't 5.1/4.1 or whatever, I thought that COULD be the problem, but seeing as they work for everything else except voice, I was hoping that wouldn't be the problem. And this DOES happen it multiple games; L4D1 and 2, Fallout 3,HL2... I'm sure it's not just one game. Say, it couldn't be because I have speaker fill on, could it?
Speaker fill?
It makes more channels for things that aren't made for 3+ speakers. I think. I mean I know it makes it use all the speakers, I'm not sure of the actual process. Google didn't have anything to say, either. Anyway, I would test it, but I don't have time right now. Any other info on what might be the problem?

Yes you can. You can plug a pair of speakers into any analog port on a soundcard, it doesn't matter what kind of speakers they are. Each port outputs signal for two channels, and any pair of speakers can play that signal. It's the actual software settings that control how and from which ports the signal gets output.

I just set up a ghetto "7.1" system with a pair of speakers and 3 pairs of headphones, and it actually works properly:c00lbert:. Headphones are plugged even into the center&subwoofer port, the sub channel sounds kind of funny though.
What brand is the onboard audio?
Might wanna reload the drivers and maybe find a program from the manifacturer that allows you to configuere your speakes in 5.x mode.
Sorry for late reply, I got around to testing it and it WAS because of speaker fill. Also, thanks Pebkac! I'm using my headset as a Center/LFE, plus it gives me more reason to use my mic. Sounds weird, but awesome. Good for the few games that reset to 2 speakers whenever I set it to 4, too. Although, I can't hear anything out of the LFE side, probably just because it's a headphone. Whatever, thanks for your input everyone, and Pebkac for the idea.

The setup i did was just a proof that it actually works, you usually wouldn't want to use anything like that. You have the headset connected to the port that's meant for the front center speaker and subwoofer, that way you're just hearing the sound coming from the wrong place. If anything, you could set up the headphones for the side channels and have speakers covering the front and back left/right channels.

That's a much better idea. thing is, it'd still be trying to use the center speaker, and I can neither afford to buy one, or find anything to use for it.
