Is there any free software like VLC that can play blu-ray?
VLC is free... Right?
VLC is free... Right?
Don't think it supports Blu-Ray though.
I looked at VLC and I don't think it can read blu-rays.
Mpc-hc
Mpc-hc
I looked everywhere on the website and it doesn't say it can play blu-ray. I will try it when I get my blu-ray drive this friday.
Blu Ray uses the .mkv format right? VLC supports it.
Blu Ray uses the .mkv format right? VLC supports it.
mkv are ripped files of blu-ray, kinda like divx but for 1080p HD

A video file ripped from a BD-rom will play fine in VLC but it doesn't know how to read the disks themselves because of the copy protection or something. So no, there's no free way to watch blu-ray movies on your PC yet. Software like DVDFab has free trials however, you could use that to rip the disk.

I can look around for one, my friend might have some software that he does not use.
AnyDVD HD will solve that problem, but then you might as well just spend the money on a commercial software player.

If you're willing to settle for 720p you can get them even smaller, around a GB. DVDFab Lifetime subscription is 105 Euros. Those are just fucking extortionate. Someone needs to release something like DVD Shrink but for Blu-Rays and knock these assholes down a peg.
Wait a second, there's STILL not built in software to read Blu-Ray Discs? [editline]02:53AM[/editline] Holy shit, after a bit of research, I've found out that Blu-Ray DRM was made by Lucifer himself.
I've found out that Blu-Ray DRM was made by Lucifer himself.
BD copy protection is easy to crack it's just that nobody has released software to do it for free yet.
Now that I think of it, if not for copy protection stuffs I think WMP12 can play the format.
I watch blu-ray in MPC
I watch blu-ray in MPC
straight off the disc? You must mean ripped blu-rays..
XMBC supports it I believe
straight off the disc? Each blu-ray movie has it's own unique encryption. Encryption that somebody at slysoft has to crack. Can you imagine how hard this is? And they have to do this forever?
I used cyberlink powerdvd there was a free trial but mine ran out :(
You need to either use cyberlink or anydvd. m2ts files are ripped off the dvd after the encryption is removed. I'd recommend getting anydvd and then if you want to backup the videos convert them to 720p .mkv's. Ninja'd

They grab the encryption keys from other software or hardware bluray players. Read up on how bluray's DRM works, before you naively suggest they 'crack' the encryption for every disk.
Put it in your ps3! Hang on that's free right? :o [sp]not including the price of the ps3[/sp]
Well yes, in the same way that putting it in any other hardware player is "free".
Each blu-ray movie has it's own unique encryption.
Not really. BD+ is more sophisticated than HDDVD's DRM was though. You can read about how it works here
