• Connecting to xbox live via dial up?

I've connected my laptop to the internet using this dial-up thing we just got, and I connected my laptop up to my xbox using an ethernet cable. But my xbox still won't connect to the internet. What do?
Is it Ethernet or Dial-up? Cause dial-up is slower than evolution. [editline]05:35PM[/editline] Also connect the Xbox directly to the Router, not through the laptop
Dialup? Please tell you've messed up with terms
He can't connect a x360 to a dialup modem lol
Dialup? Please tell you've messed up with terms
The pen drive thing that plugs into my laptop and lets me have internet? You need to get a crossover cable I think, not just a regular ethernet cable [editline]07:41PM[/editline] http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=crossover+cable&x=0&y=0 Just pick the right length
I think he's trying to bridge the connection [editline]07:43PM[/editline] emphasis on think

It can connect to the laptop, just not to the internet.
Are you sure about that? It can connect to the laptop, just not to the internet.
It can't connect to the internet because you can't use a laptop as a router. I've tried with my desktop PC before, you have to hook the thing up directly the modem or router.
Are you sure about that? It can connect to the laptop, just not to the internet.
Finley is correct, a crossover cable is needed to connect two like-devices: In this case, an Xbox and a laptop. Both are technically PCs.
He just needs to set up ICS.
For ICS (internet connectino sharing) Lead yourself into Network Connections through the control panel> Right click on the connection that's giving you internet, click properties>click on the sharing tab on top> Tick "Allow other users to connect through this computer's Internet connection" and click ok. Then just hook up your laptop and xbox with an ethernet cable. You'll most likely need a crossover cable, you can make one yourself or buy one. I could look up for the diagrams that show you how to make it if you want. [editline]03:49PM[/editline] INACIO YOU BROOKDED MAH AUTOMERGE :argh::argh:

I'm only going to be using this dial up for another few weeks, so I don't want to buy a crossover cable specifically for this.
I made one like a year ago but I lost the diagrams, I'll go find them right now Oh and 400 posts :woop::woop::woop::woop::woop: [editline]04:04PM[/editline] It might be a bit confusing so I'll take pics of my crossover cable. Gimme like 5 or 10 minutes. Also have you tried just a normal ethernet cable? My network cards support MDIX so I don't have to use crossover cables. Guys, the 360 has crossover capabilities built-in. It figures it out on its own whether or not it needs to do the crossover process. So having a crossover cable is entirely moot.

All the NIC's in my server support auto-switching and they're only 100Mbps cards. I'd imagine the xbox is capable.
I don't know about yours but mine certainly doesn't
Maybe it only works in South Dakota. :downs: It works with all my friend's Xbox's. And it did ICS with a 13 year old Compaq Deskpro just fine without a crossover cable. The NIC most likely could not do crossover on its own.
Care to suggest why can't connect without one then
I dunno. I'm no networking guru. All I know that every 360 I've used, supports crossover just fine. I just found it as a pleasant change from the original Xbox, which did not have this capability. Then I could use my 25 ft ethernet extension cable.
Can I buy crossover cables in stores?
You don't need one. A plain old ethernet cable works just fine for this
OP probably has but did you try a regular ethernet cable? If that didn't work it's really simple, if you have a spare ethernet cable lying around you just cut it and connect 4 wires. It's not rocket science.
Set your laptop so it shares the network over the ethernet. I had to do it for a while, it's a pain, but it worked.
