ACLU Study: Blacks are 10-30 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana than whites despite stat
WASHINGTON (AP) — Black people are arrested for possessing marijuana far more often than white people, even though marijuana use by both races is about the same, the American Civil Liberties Union reports in a new study.
The ACLU's analysis of federal crime data, released Tuesday, found marijuana arrest rates for black people were 3.73 times greater than those for white people nationally in 2010. In some counties, the arrest rate was 10 to 30 times greater for blacks. In two Alabama counties, 100 percent of those arrested for marijuana possession were black, the ACLU said.
When it comes to marijuana use, about 14 percent of black people and 12 percent of white people reported in 2010 that they had used the drug during the previous year, according to data that the ACLU obtained from the National Drug Health Survey, a Health and Human Services publication. Among younger people ages 18-25, use was greater among whites.
An overall increase in marijuana possession arrests from 2001 to 2010 is largely attributable to drastic increases in arrests of black people, the ACLU said.
Blacks were arrested at a rate of 537 per 100,000 people nationally in 2001. In 2010, their arrest rate rose to 716 per 100,000. The 2001 number for white people was 191 per 100,00 and rose to 192 per 100,000 in 2010, the ACLU said. Despite the disparate rates, far more whites were arrested for marijuana possession in 2010, 460,808 compared to blacks, 286,117.
remember, racism is over, the trend now is anti-white(according to some idiots)
So cops are racist, can't say I'm surprised.
Cops stereotype, its how they pull people over.
If i see a white teen driving his moms prius and a black guy driving a dark honda accord, id pull the black guy.
Just how cops work, not saying its right.

why can't the black guy be driving his mother honda?

You just said you'd pull the black guy over just because he was black.

funny that your avatar is from a story that basically says "dont be racist"
I like how the thread title is worded as if the discrepancy found in "two Alabama counties" applies presumably nationwide.

Well considering a majority of the prison population is black. And a majority of arrests/prison sentences are drug related. I'd say it's pretty applicable.
You have to consider the circumstances of how they were caught with marijuana as well.

It's also pretty damn misleading, so it's a shitty title.

No, not at all? If you read the article, it gives a "nationwide" average. And it's 3-10 times less than the thread title. "In some counties" is pretty obviously not a statistic that can be applied nationwide.

The 100 percent in two Alabama counties is really meaningless without more information. If one guy was arrested, and he was black, that would also make it 100 percent, but it would be meaningless.
why can't the black guy be driving his mother honda?
Why would he steal his own mother's Honda?

Anti-white racism exists just as much as anti-black, you'd be a fool to deny its existence.
As long as a community hates the other, the other will hate it back. This is a vicious circle.
Not surprising, it's illegal to be black on a friday night in most cities

No considering we live in a white majority nation I'm pretty sure anti-black exists more than anti-white.

So black people are disproportionately jailed because of simple circumstance? Yeah I don't think so. Besides, what circumstances would there be? It's only for marijuana possession, not for something like growing or distributing.

It's pretty nation wide
I've got a co-worker who was pulled over while he was on the job (delivery driver) by the same cop who's been targeting him for months, and they even went out of their way to immediately arrest him in our parking lot, put in in the back of a police car, and bring drug dogs out. The whole process took about 40 minutes. After they found nothing, they let him go, and actually get back to work.
They have never ever found anything on him, and the only reason why he keeps getting treated like this by the same cop and pulled over for cherry-picked bullshit reasons is because he's a black guy who lives and delivers pizza near section 8, drives a crappy car.
In 2010, twice as many whites were arrested for weed than blacks
Racism. Or is it only racist when it's about people other than whites

I don't think you read the post you're replying to. No one is disputing that racial profiling happens. He was saying that the thread title makes it sound like "Blacks are 10-30 times more likely to be arrested for marijuana than whites" is true overall, when it's only true in "some counties".

You do realize that absolute values don't matter as much as rates right?
That still shows that a disproportionate amount of black people get arrested for weed.
In 2010 about 72% of the United States population was white and 12% black.

Yeah no fucking shit dude there are a lot more white people in the US than blacks.

So it IS only racist when it isn't whites, then. Got it
You guys do realize that maybe it isn't racism, but that minorities DO actually do the majority of crime in this country. Even in cities where the majority of the police force are black, you see the same damn stats. It isn't racism. Profiling and searching for PC to question them maybe, but if they had something illegal on them then I guess the officer was doing their job well

how does it feel to be racist?
Did you read the article? Marijuana use was the same between the races, yet more black people are jailed for it. Gonna say that isn't racism?
I'm calling correlation doesn't equal causation, blacks as a whole show a greater tendency to crime (justify it however you want, these are the facts), and thus they would be arrested more due to other effects than "racism". Or at least, that's one way to interpret these results.

Read the fucking article. A 2% difference in use does not equate to a 500 arrests per 100,000 population difference.
You don't interpret facts.

it's hard to say what you just said without sounding racist... It's a community problem not a racial one.

Theres racism against all ethnicities, although racism towards white people is almost non-existant.
