Would you rather ride a train to Phoenix than face traffic on Interstate 10?The Arizona Department of Transportation wants to know and is spending $4.5 million in federal grants to figure out that, and other aspects of train travel. The Intercity Rail Study, including a feasibility study and an environmental impact study, will be available to the public and policy makers in 2013. The study team wants input on the modes of transportation people would like to use, routes they would like to take, and the purpose of their travel, said project manager Michael Kies. The team gathered public input during an open house Friday. They handed out booklets that describe a growing problem: The Tucson-Phoenix stretch of I-10 is nearing capacity and can't handle future demand, even with more lanes. Suzy Thomas, a teacher, described her drives to Phoenix to visit family or to go to Diamondbacks games as long and boring with unpredictable delays. She said mass transit is more environmentally friendly, but she wonders how she would get around Phoenix if she arrived by train. Soo Kim, a University of Arizona student who often travels to Phoenix, said taking a train would be awesome. Driving to Phoenix ruins her day and is sometimes scary, she said. She'd rather see tax money spent on a rail line than an extra lane on the interstate, she said, but she has concerns about whether the line would be profitable and how well it would be maintained. Rail Study open houses • 6 to 9 tonight at the Second Saturdays event, in the University of Arizona Downtown building, 44 N. Stone Ave. • 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Pima Community College's Northwest Campus, 7600 N. Shannon Road. • At a booth at Tucson Meet Yourself Friday through Sunday, Oct. 14-16. • Participate online at azdot.gov/intercityrail Contact reporter Becky Pallack at bpallack@azstarnet.com or 573-4346.
Arizona Star Please... This would make traveling up to Phoenix too hang out with friends a lot easier, and I'm all for alternatives to getting to the airport.
I have lived in Tucson for the past eleven years and Tempe for the past three months, it'd be ridiculously easy to tie this straight in with Downtown Tucson (the Amtrak station) and Skyharbor (loop it through I10 and park it RIGHT next to the fucking light rail airport terminal).
OH MY GOD PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD DO THIS. I would love to be able to take a day trip to tucson without using that much gas. I would also love for the PHX light rail to go farther east into Mesa, even though i know it won't be happening.
is this related to the rail thing obama started a while ago?
