Its a Box!
It does look weirdly similar to the Xbox 360 design with the button, but then again, what other shapes could you really use for a console I suppose... [sp]IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN SPHERICAL[/sp]
But can it play diretide? :v:

Looks cool for a prototype.
Looks nifty. With luck I might get that instead of just getting the parts and building the PC myself.

This looks cool, but the Xbone looks like a VCR? I don't get you people.
This looks cool, but the Xbone looks like a VCR? I don't get you people.
This is a prototype, there will be steam machines that look totally different. The Xbone is always going to look like a VCR.
This looks cool, but the Xbone looks like a VCR? I don't get you people.
They played it safe with the console design. I'm not impressed with the current aesthetics, but I think we should all focus on how it performs rather than what it looks like.
This is a prototype, there will be steam machines that look totally different. The Xbone is always going to look like a VCR.
I understand, but people are saying this prototype look nice.
I'm a bit disappointed you don't turn a plastic valve to turn the console on.
Was expecting it to be more cube like but whatever, would look nicely hidden on top of my other stuff.
I'm just disappointed it isn't orange... [editline]4th November 2013[/editline] If it was I have the perfect name for it!
I'm just disappointed it isn't orange... [editline]4th November 2013[/editline] If it was I have the perfect name for it!
Orange Parallelepiped!
I'm just disappointed it isn't orange... [editline]4th November 2013[/editline] If it was I have the perfect name for it!
... Boooooo...
I hope I can get a wired controller or allow the wireless one to be charged somehow, I'm already kind of sick of having to get new batteries for my controllers all the time.
I hope I can get a wired controller or allow the wireless one to be charged somehow, I'm already kind of sick of having to get new batteries for my controllers all the time.
It would have a USB port.

The thing about the SteamOS being limited worries me. No file system access, no media playback... Does that mean the wishing to hack around some will have to install a different OS first thing?

That trackball controller.
That looks surprisingly unremarkable considering the hardware they're packing.
The thing about the SteamOS being limited worries me. I don't recall about Unix in general or SteamOS in particular having these limitations.
That looks surprisingly unremarkable considering the hardware they're packing. Do you know something I don't? I don't recall about Unix in general or SteamOS in particular having these limitations.
I could've just misunderstood that Engagdet article (mostly), but the way I understood is that SteamOS is similar to Big Picture, just running on a Linux variant, with very limited functionality...
That means it also has the limitations of Steam: SteamOS is not the replacement for Windows 8 you've been waiting for. Beyond basics like browsing the web, there's little in the way of standard OS functions. While Valve reps showed off slides of the box's vanity shots using a Windows PC, I asked how I'd view such shots from within SteamOS -- the answer is that there's no real way to do so, as there's no file browsing system or image viewing application. While these limitations may not affect the vast majority of Steam Machine buyers (who are essentially buying a game console), it certainly impacts folks who are looking at Steam Machines as a replacement for their standard PC. Make no mistake: Steam Machines are PCs posing as game consoles, which comes with both positives and negatives. *** The operating system, however, is another story entirely. Without even base level support for media playback, streaming options (Netflix, Hulu, etc.), and a relatively limited list of games supported natively, it's very clearly early days for SteamOS (Valve says it's in active talks with streaming companies, and working with a variety of developers to develop their games for SteamOS). At this point, though, it's hard to consider music/TV/movies one of the "pillars" of Valve's operating system, and we haven't seen game streaming in action.
It looks like a DVR.
