It's amazing how the stupid jokes about gamers/nerds never changes. Hurr durr, you must go to Star Trek conventions.
I like watching esports.
And I've never watched startrek.
The panel consists of a bunch of middle aged twats who likely find just logging into Facebook challenging, I wouldn't expect them to have any other opinion of eSports
What a bunch ignorant old people.
I don't give a shit about LoL, and the only Star Trek I've watched was TNG, which if you grew up in the 90's chances are you did/do too.
most of these people are douches anyways.
Because poker sure is athletic.
I love Star Trek and have been to cons and hate Esports. These people are fucking stupid.
Also, all sports are games, but that's been covered.
No one bats an eye at Poker or Chess tournaments, but put it on a computer suddenly there's a fucking issue.
People who play football also attend asshole conventions.
See I can be ignorant too
"It's just a game"
SO IS FOOTBALL
SO IS BASKETBALL
SO IS HOCKEY
SO IS EVERY SPORT
So is chess, which is recognized as a sport by the International Olympic Committee
Some several thousand people in a huge hall watching two highly skilled teams compete against each other in order to acquire a large sum of prize money and fame? Seems pretty self explanatory to me. Of course, I've seen an episode or two of Star Trek so I guess my opinion isn't valid hurrrr
I was almost going to get mad while reading the article, then I watched the video and saw it was just a bunch of old people who probably barely even know what a computer is, and I just laughed. I mean it's not like you can expect them to have a positive opinion on professional gaming.
So is the host a man or a women? I can't tell
Given that gaming is becoming more and more popular I imagine it's just a matter of time before there's MOBAs in the Olympics or something :v:
Love how the only one in the video that didn't go "HAAH SPOTS = BIG MUSLY MEN KIKIN BALLS" is the chick in a red dress that isn't an old ass bitch.
These people should be playin with their fuckin sand clocks instead of just sittin in a room talking shit about games.
I play LoL sometimes and I still have trouble spectating for more than a short period of time.
I don't like watching "real" sports though either.
Isn't a sport just a set of rules in which people compete? Kids playing cowboys and Indians is technically a sport if they define rules and keep score. What makes videogames not sport?

I don't watch video games very often, especially compared to how much I play them, but when massive events are going on it's really neat IMO to see the amazing strategies people come up with.
This entire thread just got nerd-baited.
Look at all the rage page hits HBO will get for this.
It's not a traditional sport and it requires little athletic ability but neither does golf.
Its going to be a completely different world in 30 years when all of the people who are currently middle aged and were born in the "will never understand technology or the modern world" age group either die off or are retired.
I think eSports will remain a niche but in the future remain one the same sense that minor league baseball or wrestling or UFC are all niche sports. Because in 30 years we are going to see middle aged people who have a certain level of mainstream authority, who have grown up and been around technology, games, etc all their lives and as such the concept of video games being any different compared to other entertainment or other types of games will be foreign.
There's still this stigma that video games are this "wacky new nerd culture thing!!" now simply because the mainstream middle-aged audience are largely people who don't understand technology at all and were born in a time that was completely different to how the world works now.
Well, sooner or later we're gonna see some DOTA 2 / LoL championships on TV.
It'd be a retard move to not air it.
Old fuddy duddies. There's no difference between playing football and playing League of legends. I find both boring as shit but that's not the point.
I think the clue is in the 'e' bit. They're not trying to be a sport, but there's no other word for it. What you think of then overall is more based on what you've seen of them. Most have people that seem very nice and are enjoying themselves, while others are comprised of absolute bastards.
The mainstream media may always hit out at politicians, but as far as technology goes they're just one and the same.

We've had this for a couple of years now in Sweden, SVT broadcasts all the tournaments from Dreamhack. That's only twice a year though but regular broadcasts aren't that far into the future.
Esports isn't a thing, someone call up Dota, LoL, HoN, C:SS, CS:GO, Starcraft, ect that this isn't a thing.
I find eSports boring to watch. Why watch other people play a video game when I could just play it myself and be exactly as good except not on TV? It just doesn't seem entertaining. (A quick disclaimer: I'm not really a fan of sports or TV in general either so)
edit: It has occurred to me that saying I can be exactly as good as professional video game players might be a bit of an exaggeration but I really don't care

sorry no
sorry no
Okay well even if I'm not as good as the people who play professionally my point still stands? Why would I want to watch other people play when I could just go play the game myself? It's just boring, especially for games like MOBAs where the "entertaining" parts can be chopped up into two minute long clips and put in a highlight reel.
Also, anyone can be a professional gamer. It's not that hard if you REALLY care enough to do it. The same can be said for any sport.

newsflash: people like to watch sports anyway
