Luxury phones don't really work, they become outdated and then you're left with an expensive artefact. Luxury sunglasses/shades, watches etc work because they don't really ever become outdated
luxury phones don't work also becuase apple have done an amazing job at asserting their devices as a luxury status symbol on par with designer brands even tho everyone owns one.

And the people who were buying these devices probably couldn't care less about the price of switching to a newer device. And sure, these things become outdated fairly quickly (and often were 1-2 years behind at launch), but that has been true through the last 20 years as far as I'm concerned, and they only closed this year. I think it's a bit simplistic to say that "luxury phones don't work" because obviously they did for a long time.
