My monitor intermittently goes black for about two and a half seconds and comes back up. The only possible troubleshooting scenario I've researched is that the monitor is overheating. The monitor does seem particularly warm, especially compared to my secondary monitor, along the left edge. The monitor I'm using is the Acer S230HL running native 1080p. Should this be the problem, how do I go about fixing it?
Does it only have this problem after being on for awhile or does it happen randomly even if the monitor has not been on for a long time?
Also check for loose cables and update video drivers.
It sounds as if the backlight or the backlight control circuitry is possibly failing.

If it's the backlight, he should be able to shine a flashlight at it from an angle and see the image. But I suppose testing that within a two second span would be pretty hard.
I'm pretty certain it's the power supply starting to fail, I had the exact same issue with it switching off and then back on with my old monitor which I eventually traced to a failing capacitor inside the PSU.
Try clean it out and see if they helps, otherwise there is not much you can do to fix it unless you really know what your doing.
It's not the CCFL inverter.

That pretty much explains your problem.

I did notice the other monitor I found online was also an Acer. I have no idea how to look inside my monitor much less what to do with it so that doesn't sound like a good idea. It's not too disruptive, I just wanted to know if there was a minor fix for it.

I think it takes a while before I notice it first go off. Loose cables was the first thing I checked for but everything's connected. And video drivers are updated.
