Since I kinda want to use this thread as future reference and also be informative:
What is a gasmask?
A gas mask (or respirator) is an object you put on your face or head and it filters out harmful biological agents using a filter or some other means of doing so. Most modern gas masks have a filter filled with carbon or some other element to siphon out all the harmful stuff in the air. There are a couple oddballs that also fulfill the same purpose but I'll get to that later in the miscellaneous section. Since WWI, people sought some kind of device that protects their soldiers from chemical warfare that was prevalent at the time (even before WWI, some miners wear a breathing filter apparatus thing to protect their lungs from poison in the air, and even way before that were doctors during the Black Plague that covered themselves completely to avoid the "poison" from the afflicted) so the people in WWI came up with respirators or gas masks that kept the soldiers safe from chemicals used against them. Since then, chemical/biological warfare became far and few but then again you never know when shit hits the fan and you end up coughing your lungs out. Have a collection of dubyadubya wun gasmasks
Can gas masks be used for airsofting?
It really depends on the mask, but most gas masks are not ANSI rated. It would be advised to not use gas masks for airsofting UNLESS you have some sort of document or manual about the gas mask saying that it's ANSI/ballistic rated; otherwise you can try shooting the lenses multiple times to see if it deflects BBs but the cost of fucking up your lenses are at your own risk. Here are some respirators that I know are p safe:
S10: Ballistic outserts (probably the most common and easiest to find) FM12: Ballistic outserts M17 (and replicas/variants): Ballistic outserts (rare) M40/M42: Ballistic outserts (extremely rare) M45: Ballistic by default M50 (as well as JSGPM variants): Ballistic by default MCU-2/P: Ballistic outserts (also relatively common) Scotts SEA fullface sumshit maske: i dunno lol one of our IFAPers have one and it's ANSI rated :v:
Alternatively, you can do a DIY visor or replace the lens altogether but note: It's your own fault if something goes wrong and you end up blind; Some fields may not even allow you to wear gas masks as an alternative to paintball masks or goggles. Here's also what fucking happens when you wear a non-ansi rated gas mask to an airsoft game: http://www.airsoftcanada.com/showthread.php?t=41837&highlight=gas+mask+break
Filters - are they poisonous?
All filters during WWII and prior to that are supposedly poisonous because the filter has asbestos. If you are to wear WWII (or prior) gas masks for reenactment (never use it for airsofting because it's likely that gas masks back then never really had any ballistic protection for the lenses; or anything transparent used for glass) then hollow out the filter (with caution obviously) or not wear one at all. All modern filters are generally safe because they use carbon stuffs. Here is a list posted up on my facebook group: Confirmed masks with filters that contain asbestos:. If there's a really hard question, you'd be better off asking him) http://gasmasklexikon.com/ (Informative site, has a bunch of rare masks for your viewing pleasure. Nothing is for sale though) http://www.gasmasks.net/ (good site, retrorespirators is friends with the site owner and can confirm his reliability; a bit pricey but many rare masks) http://www.varusteleka.fi/group/gas-masks/196 (OCCASIONALLY stocks extremely rare gas masks, prices aren't too bad either) http://www.armygasmasks.com/default.asp (DO NOT BUY FROM HERE UNLESS YOU WANT TO WASTE YOUR MONEY. Everything here is overpriced as fuck, Zeta Lab's Nugget doesn't even compare to how overpriced this shitty site is. Use it only to look at gas masks and accessories OR when the owner does a mega bargain sale which is never) http://www.approvedgasmasks.com/ (also overpriced but not as much as the above. Some good sale prices but you're better off with ebay. Use it as reference to gas mask parts and accessories) http://www.ebay.com/ (Overall best site for buying masks and filters, just inconsistent when it comes to stocking obviously. Dan also says to check other ebays like German ebay to find rarer masks)

Gasmasks in vidja gmaes???
Ok I'll make a list because a lot of people probably want one because of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Contributin'. The three thingys (can't remember what they are called now) is there because I do switch the thingy on the hat occasionally, and I also keep the biggest star on my other, black ushanka. I also have one olive-black of those scarfs which I would use instead of tan when going into the woods, but I can not seem to find it :(

Here are mine: [editline]8th September 2011[/editline] both are real CBRN gear and it's hot as hell
fucking shit i want that helmet
I want the Polish MP-5 mask. Think it should be ballistic rated, that's what our army uses.
An alternative to a gas mask is a paint respirator. It's easier to hollow out the filters, they're lighter, and if you get a half-mask you can combine it with a pair of goggles and so don't need to worry about the ballistic properties of the lenses.
I want a Half-Life 2 combine soldier gas mask. And a full combine soldier suit ofc.
yeah, I'll probably edit the op tonight or tomorrow about paint respirators and gasmasks in vidya games

if you have time to go back and find some photos of you from ages ago then you're not doing a very good job of drawing my handsome self
what era is that from fish, that's awesome.
Due to faschist laws I can't get an airsoft gun untill next year, but I have started prepairing for some kind of STALKER outfit. Got a GP-V and a GP5 with voice membrane. Going to replace the lenses with some fancy plastics.
www.approvedgasmasks.com
They're good for buying goggles, too. They have ANZI rated goggles for $20 there. http://www.approvedgasmasks.com/uvex-goggles.htm Has all the shit you would find on Desert Locust goggles for less than half the price.
Both are in the OP. Another A+ post by ShadoWxAssassiNxLeeTxSnipeRx1996
Both are in the OP. Another A+ post by ShadoWxAssassiNxLeeTxSnipeRx1996
I'm always the one who fucks up with that. Well that goggle link is still good. :downs: [editline]September 9th,2011[/editline] Fixed the other post!
What would be a good gas mask to get for a S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Halloween costume? I most likely won't use it to airsoft, but I want an actual gas mask because I want something cool.
