• 2+ monitors on two different Nvidia GPU's (SLI or no sli)

Well fuck me sideways... just yesterday i realized something i always should have known... That the card i have for quite a while, it only supports two monitors. BUT, since the card i have now is now discontinued, i won't be able to buy another one, enable SLI, and have more than two monitors on at the same time... What i have is a Gainward GeForce® GTX 460 1024MB "GS". Surprisingly sturdy card, takes a beating. And i have the intend of upgrading to something in the style of a Gainward GeForce GTX 580, or a Gigabyte one ... SO HERE IS THE FUCKING QUESTION: Would i be able to run a GTX 460, and a GTX 580 at the same time, and have support for more than two screens at the same time?
you'll have support for multiple mknitors, but only in windows, you wont be able to enable SLI for gaming on 3 screens
you'll have support for multiple mknitors, but only in windows, you wont be able to enable SLI for gaming on 3 screens
I don't care for multiple-screen gaming ... i fucking hate it. I just have three screens laying around, and for the future i want to run a permanent 3-screen option because its so damn convenient
Damn right, before I put my spare CRT's to use, I thought >1 screen was stupid, now I can't even use a single screen computer :v:
Also, the stock 580 is a waste of money, go for a 2.5GB 570 instead. You will be able to 3 monitor with that setup. No SLI though.
Each GPU supports 2 monitors. Has to do with each GPU having two clock engines I believe. Which is why Nvidia needs a minimum of 2 GPU's for surround. AMD gets around this but has drawbacks. Each card can run two displays. So with 2 cards, you can run 4 monitors.

You can still look for a 460 somewhere. They should still be selling them. You do not need to get a Gainward one, you can get any, just look that it is the 1GB version.
Nooooo I was planning on hooking up a third display to my gtx 470. guess not anymore. thanks for saving me $5 on an hdmi cable.
no? what the fuck? [editline]20th October 2011[/editline] yes it will work op
The performance gain is something like 15%, whilst the price increase is huge.
You can use any combination of graphics cards you want for multi monitoring in standard desktop application. And with SoftTH you can even game on any combination of GPUs. I've personally done it [gaming] with these combinations on three monitors: ATI x1600 + 8400gs ATI x850 + ATI x1600 Nvidia 560Ti + ATI x1600 It's no official way of doing things but it's just an added "Bonus"
The performance gain is something like 15%, whilst the price increase is huge.
which is true for every step up in graphics cards
Heh, I'm using a setup with a ATI HD4870X2 as main card hooked up to my main monitor, and a Nvidia Geforce 7300LE as a secondary card hooked up to my extra monitor. Works fine, though installing the drivers are a little bit tricky for the Nvidia card.
Looking at it all, i think i am gonna scout for a cheap Gainward GTX 460

You DO NOT need that much memory just for desktop multimonitor. I would consider getting another 460 and using that, then SLI when you want to play game and turn it off when you want 4 monitors. SLI will run up to 3 monitors.
