It’s important to note Lehahn’s apology refers specifically to the game’s bugs and broken systems, rather than any design decisions. Over the course of an hour’s discussion, he is by turns accepting and defensive regarding whether various parts of Rebirth’s design worked or not.
This is the real problem, right here. It's frustrating. Bernd is very apologetic about the technical problems in the game, but when asked about design problems he parrots on like "it's not X4" and "maybe some hardcore fans didn't like the changes", when it's clear that almost nobody liked them. If Bernd would at least say "we goofed up on rebirth, sorry about the hype" I could have hope for the future, but with that guy in charge the game will forever be a mess.

It's core to what is wrong with the X series. Egosoft just aren't good game developers. They never have been.
They have over a decades worth of games that are broken and have to be fixed by the community to put them into a remotely playable state. (That's a whole other topic in itself.) Time and time again they make decisions about gameplay that are baffling. They kept re-using a decade old engine and instead of creating a new one or making low level improvements they kept on adding new features on top of their Jenga pile of an engine to the point where it became unmanageable. There are limitations imposed on the main X series (X3/TC/AP) right now because of decisions they made fifteen years ago like the system sizes, layout, and SETA drive.
X:Rebirth was the most quintessentially Egosoft thing the world has ever seen. Egosoft in its purest form. Their most remarkable quality is taking amazing ideas and ruining them with poor implementations. Their ambition is always far outpaces their skill. Rebirth is poorly designed, it's poorly optimized, it's flat out unplayable and at it's core it's a broken game. It's not even the bugs that necessarily kill it. It's the game that kills it. I wish I could say I it was surprising, but it really wasn't.
Rebirth was almost Mechwarrior Online levels of disappointment. Rebirth was, conceptually, exactly what the X series needed. It needed a new engine and a gameplay reboot from the ground up. The X series and its engine was in the mess it was because they refused to do just that. It speaks volumes that with the clean slate that Egosoft had to make the game they've always wanted to make, this is what we got.
I try so hard to like you Egosoft. I admire how ambitious damn near everything about everything you do is. I still recommend the X games to people (albeit with caution) because there's nothing like them on the market but honestly... that might be the reason that X has lasted as long as it has. X Rebirth's colossal failure was a long time coming and as much as it pains me to say it, it's the failure that Egosoft deserved.
Rebirth is rotten to the core IMO
I haven't played it since its initial release and I tried to like it but I haven't gone back since
I can't see it reaching into the mediocre range with updates
