"Selfie" might be the Oxford Dictionary's word of the year, but one woman's self portrait is teaching us all a lesson in selfie etiquette.
Folks, don't take a photo of yourself in front of a tragedy.
On Tuesday morning, a woman, identified only as a tourist, snapped a photo of herself in front of the Brooklyn Bridge. In the background of the photo, a suicidal man threatened to leap into the East River below.
While the man was eventually talked down from the ledge and taken to the hospital for evaluation, the woman's poor photography decision lives on: It landed her on the cover of the New York Post.
"America’s selfie obsession reached a new low on Tuesday when a woman snapped a cellphone self-portrait that also captured a suicidal man on the Brooklyn Bridge," the New York Post reports.

"With scores of onlookers watching the dramatic 10 a.m. rescue by cops, the crass camerawoman turned her back to the scene, angled her phone toward the bridge and snapped a shot. The scarf-clad blonde even cracked a thin smile."
A witness told the Daily Mail that the woman had been watching the man on the bride for about 25 minutes before she pulled out her phone to take the photo.
Erm wow
What a dipshit.
If she did this just so she could have that on her picture, fuck her.
What... what the hell is she taking the picture with?
but why is someone taking a photo of her taking a selfie of the suicide attempt
imo its a really bad idea to put people like this on a front page. sure, taking a picture of yourself in a situation like that isnt the nicest thing to do, but potentially ruining someones life for it by putting it on the front page of a newspaper like that also isnt the way to go.
This smells like a bullshit story.
this smells like complete bullshit to me
I love how with her "selfie" they just magically enhanced the image enough to give a clear image of what was happening on the bridge.

Hey, its the New York Post, the US version of Daily Mail. I don't think they give a shit about ruining people's lives.
(the following is criticism of the New York Post, not of the OP for posting it here)
how was that picture news?
how is that person in any way significant?
By presenting this stand-alone, inconsequential event as significant, the NYP is really warping what we mean by "news". It should cover significant current events. This is not significant.
Also it's really inconsiderate to post a picture of a person who has little way of defending themselves publicly, and likely didn't ask for any of this.
All I got from that is that she was taking a "selfie" at the Brooklyn Bridge and happened to capture those guys. That seems innocent enough.

Look like an iPhone with some sort of case on it.

iPhones are great and all but I'm p. sure they can't take a picture of itself from a metre away.

i dont read either :~)
iPhones are great and all but I'm p. sure they can't take a picture of itself from a metre away.
It's obviously just someone taking a picture her (taking a picture of herself).
iPhones are great and all but I'm p. sure they can't take a picture of itself from a metre away.
Also she isn't pointing it at herself. This whole thing seems staged.
So somebody took a picture of her taking a selfie, and even took a further closer picture of the suicidal guy? I'm not quite sure I get it.
So somebody took a picture of her taking a selfie, and even took a further closer picture of the suicidal guy? I'm not quite sure I get it.
Somebody took a picture of her pretending to take a self, and then whipped out their work-funded DSLR to take a nice hi-rez photo of the people on the bridge.
AKA a rigged story.
I love how with her "selfie" they just magically enhanced the image enough to give a clear image of what was happening on the bridge.
Or, you know, that enhancement is a picture taken by someone else?
I don't know the proper protocol for jumpers, but if I saw 3 guys in the distance like that, I'd assume it's just workers doing maintenance and continue taking pictures of the bridge
So..... somebody took a picture of her taking a picture of herself in front of a jumper who was talked down?
Why does it seem like more and more news stories are just made up bullshit?
Also she isn't pointing it at herself. This whole thing seems staged.
May come to a surprise to you but these devices have front cameras.
Funny that the angle the phone is at would never even get close to capture the men on the bridge which are right behind her
Also she isn't pointing it at herself. This whole thing seems staged.
iPhones have a front facing camera.

Why was somebody taking a photo of her taking a selfie and why was she perfectly ok with it?

If it was at that angle her head would have obscured the view of people.
