I've actually been at this one for the last 6 years (literally) but for 2 years it sat without me touching it. The reason it takes so long is taht I am never really happy with the shape or lines, but I am coming to a point where I like the color blending. The body is unlike any typical guitar so it was all done from scratch and a combination of several drawings in a project notebook I keep. Now that this year's boat project is done I can get back to it. IT is all 100% hand-carved. Once I glued the block together, I have only used rat-tails, files, sand paper, and chisels. Nothing powered. I wanted it to be barbaric in nature and creation. The top is Purpleheart which will look purple when finished, the middle is maple, and the back is paduk which is an orange-red and resembles a tiger's-eye marble when done. I have carved and carved at each color to try to get lines I liked. THey were originally all straight, or just convex and I didn't like it ever, so I think Im close to a shape I can be happy with. The top part of the headstock is still making me mad, I think I may lay a thin piece of maple over the whole thing and shape it in. The purple doesn't seem to cutoff correctly no matter what I do. None of the ports for the electronics have been finish routered yet so ignore those, they'll be a bit bigger in the future as I have switched my plan to using one set of humbuckers along with the other singles. Pictures of different spots on request, but I wont get back to this till about monday when its back at my shop.
Probably the most "neck-through" guitar I've ever seen, not sure I've seen a project made from one piece before Reminds me of the lute in skyrim :v:
Probably the most "neck-through" guitar I've ever seen, not sure I've seen a project made from one piece before Reminds me of the lute in skyrim :v:
I was fairly certain someone would have made a guitar out of one solid block by now. The idea for the second arm going to the headstock was inspired by an 80's ugly-ass guitar I saw in a magazine several years ago. IT looked like a giant block assembled with 2x4's. I improved on the design...

I can't think of any mass-produced models like that though, mostly just one-off customs. AS for the Kingpins, those aren't ugly and actually looks close to my design. I was hoping mine would'd be more original, but I guess its not exactly the same. The fact that this dude is mass-producing these is worrysome for me as I've already sold the one Im working on when I started the project. I got $4,500 just for the finished product when it was done and he supplied me with the electronics for free. I believe he intends to resale it for much more, since he owns a music shop. I have some other ideas though.
the kingpin is hardly mass produced, there are only a couple dozen floating around and they're made by commission only afaik
the kingpin is hardly mass produced, there are only a couple dozen floating around and they're made by commission only afaik
Oh, so that's not so bad. SO they don't make another one till they get paid?
yep, commission only. they probably make one or two a year at most. other than the ones shown on that page there are only like 30 and I think most of them are in private collections. as far as I can tell it's loosely based on prince's old auerswald http://www.edroman.com/guitars/other-images/anastasia.jpg
woah. here i thought this was a one-off, oh well, push forward and finish it. I guess it differs due to the fact that its all one piece, as opposed to a neck through and 2 halves joined on. MY next idea was to make a guitar inspired by the one in Majora's Mask. I know that one was made and offered as a prize or something, but my idea is a little more basic, and the whole thing will once again be hand carved. I already have a block of zebra wood and maple made up for it leaning against a wall in my shop. Im hoping with a bit of a dark stain, the zebra wood will give the appearance of cracks and distortion on yellowed bone. Should be a fun experiment.
Interesting shape.
Respect for your work but it looks really damn ugly to me.
Respect for your work but it looks really damn ugly to me.
Not meant for everyone, but maybe you'll change your mind when its done. Otherwise, it is art, and each piece of work only appeals a certain audience.
btw that headstock angle is shit, you're gonna need like a floyd string retainer
btw that headstock angle is shit, you're gonna need like a floyd string retainer
The headstock angle I took from a strat. I was assuming it would work out ok.
strats have a pretty shit headstock angle
strats have a pretty shit headstock angle
ok? I have never really noticed it affect anything and its also a bit late to change it. I was thinking of a locking bar anyway.
