Current specs: GA-M56S-S3 S-Series Gigabyte Mobo AMD Athlon 64 X2 (Dual Core) 6000+ 4GB RAM GIGABYTE ATI Radeon HD 5750 (1GB, GDDR5) Running 1920x1080 650W PSU Alright, I made a thread about this earlier this year but the circumstances and times have changed. Want to do a pretty substantial upgrade so that I can run any new games coming out on pretty high settings for some time. Budget: Roughly $1500, although if it could be lowered without a big consequence to the quality of the hardware that'd be preferred. Things that immediately come to mind that need an upgrade: CPU Mobo PSU Case (my current one is a piece of shit; I'm actually terrified that it's going to explode from overheating in the coming summer) Sound system (running with $11 setup) Keep in mind that I'm Australian so newegg is only useful as a reference point for what I could buy from a different site (probably end up buying from eBay or something because Australian prices are ridiculous). Thanks in advance for help
What case do you have that could be explosive?
I wouldn't have a clue. No model name or logo on it. I've had it for the past 6 years and the vent in the side of the case doesn't even line up properly with the CPU fan (which I assume is its purpose). It gets pretty hot around here in summer and this year is looking to be particularly hot so I really want some assurance that it'll be okay.
Re-apply thermal paste, Remove the side of your PC if you get really worried.
Here's a photo, if you like:
Here's a build I've cobbled together with my extremely limited knowledge: http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/vn300m1w2n-thermaltake-black-chaser-p-51676.html http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/bx80623i72600k-intel-core-2600k-1155-p-50089.html http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/000323-logitech-z523-speakers-p-40458.html http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/n580ud-gigabyte-nvidia-gtx580-p-50303.html http://www.centrecom.com.au/catalog/erv1250egt-enermax-revolution85-1250w-p-52081.html No mobo yet, I haven't got a clue as to what I should be looking for. At the moment it's looking like I might end up raising the budget over $1.5k. C&C?
You probably should just get an i5 2500k and a GTX570, not a 580.
-You're running DDR2, right? You'd need new RAM -If you're strictly gaming, then drop down to a 2500K, and grab yourself a nice heatsink -You're spending too much on a PSU. You'd be fine with 650W, or 850W if you want to SLI -I wouldn't spend that much on a case, but I guess that's up to you. If you want suggestions though, I'd go for a 912/922, not exactly a looker, but good value

Overpaying for the PSU, a 750w is enough too even for SLI 570's.
What kind of performance difference will there be between the i5 2500K and the i7 2600K? If it's significant then the extra money isn't that big an issue for me. [editline]24th October 2011[/editline] This is looking into the future, not just right now And thanks for the contributions.
Barely noticeable, and only for fairly specific cases.
Fair enough. What about cooling parts?
CPU and case both come with fans. If you want better or quieter cooler, you should get either a Hyper 212 Evo, or a Be Quiet! Dark Rock PRO.
Or, if you are feeling very stupid and/or manly, you could buy some sheet copper and some pipes and weld yourself a water cooling system. (May or may not explode all over your i5)
