AMD Throws in the Towel: No More CPUs (APUs and GPUs Only)
We'd feared something like this would happen for some time now, but leaked AMD product roadmaps confirmed it that AMD FX "Vishera" is the last line of CPUs from AMD. The company will only focus on APUs from here onward, and at the very most, one could expect CPU core counts to go up from their current quad-core stale-meat since A-series "Llano," which will continue into the 2014 A-Series "Kaveri," too.
Well fuck. As someone using an AMD chipset that's really a kick in the balls; I was hoping my next CPU upgrade wouldn't require a new motherboard but I might very well not have a choice.
oh no! Intel, please don't jack up prices
Great, now Intel will have a monopoly
this can be very bad news, are there even any other x86-64 PC* CPU manufacturers besides intel?
Hopefully NVidia jumps in to fill the void.
Here's hoping this induces an anti-monopoly action by the EU or US against Intel.
well fuck
Great. Intel is not above sky rocketing their prices, this might very well suck.
Won't Intel be forced to separate in the U.S. because of monopoly laws?
As sad as this sounds, it doesn't sound like AMD has confirmed this information.
Hopefully some other company will come along with a competitive product. I like what Intel does, but this only makes it too easy for them to inflate prices and slack on new innovation.
Intel are better anyway..
I had a laptop with one of those APUs in it, but it was garbage. It was like 1.8ghz or somehting, couldn't even run tinychat and youtube at the same time.
I suppose that's to be expected of any new technology, and maybe I just had a really cheap one.
If this is true then RIP Intel as we know it, it'll be exciting to see what happens, and it'll be great to see more companies occupy the x86 market.

Only if they abuse their status as a monopoly.
Yeah, I don't know if you guys know this, but monopolies and monopolistic competition are more common that one might think. Plus we have ultra tight regulations so they can't jack the prices for fear of the government stepping in.

Yeah, heard this same thing years ago about roadmap not showing any new CPUs from AMD.
Intel might become a regulated monopoly because of the totality of the situation

I doubt it, technically they still have competition in desktop processors in VIA (and mobile processors in Samsung, Qualcomm, etc.), although I don't know if the antitrust regulations here in the United States refer to something like "reasonable" competition, or just flat competition. In addition, Intel has already had a practical monopoly on the desktop processor market for quite a while. I sincerely doubt that the end-user will see any effects from this besides having to change from AMD to Intel if they wish to continue upgrading when AMD reaches the end of its roadmap.
Only if they abuse their status as a monopoly.
Which they will.
Which they will.
Do you have anything to back this up? I'm sorry, but I doubt that Intel is willing to fuck itself by abusing a monopoly when they're already under extremely heavy fire from already existing anti-trust legislation and lawsuits against the practical monopoly they've had for the past fifty years.
Don't AMD own the rights to x86_64? Intel can't buy them since they'd own the market; and if I recall there's some kind of dead-man trigger on the licensing deal.
assumptions are easy, patience is hard
Which they will.
Depends on if they are wanting government intervention or not, if they continue their current business model even in the absence of competition they would have no interventions. If they suddenly increased their pricing 2x the current levels for the next generation(without a comparable increase in capabilities or research costs) they would get intervention.
Oh great the one company that made affordable CPUs (however inferior they were) are going to stop.
Cyrix, the world needs you! ;_;
Prices aren't the only problem now, Intel has less reason to keep making better desktop chipsets now.
Sweet time for PowerPC to make a comeback!

...guys? Hello?
