I recently reformatted, before the format I ran games in 1280x800 and sometimes had my desktop at 1920x1200. It looked fine before the format, just having large black bars above and underneath. But now after I updated everything, it tries stretching the resolutions to fill the whole monitor. I can't remember what I did to fix it last time.
I'm not sure what to google to get the answer, but what I did google just came up with things that don't relate.
Card:nvidia 9300m GS
OS:7
monitor: samsung syncmaster 997DF connected with VGA
Did you reinstall drivers?
Set your desktop background to not fill?
I installed the latest drivers from the website. My background is set to center...
There are different scaling options in your graphics card control panel, check under display settings if it's there.
There should be a GPU/Monitor scaling option in your driver control panel.

I already looked at that, for some reason it only lets me change my main laptop display. It won't even let me choose my external.
Why are you running at non-native resolution?
because I like the fov in game.
