my old 3G was jailbroken. It was backed up to the computer via iTunes. I had a modification on it that adds
the date with the time at the top of the iPhone's screen where the battery info and signal info are.
syncing my new iPhone 4 caused the time to appear as "Ddd". My only guess is that it want's to show the date as well
I tried restoring, but it won't work.

if you need a picture to help explain this problem please ask. I have no idea how to fix this.
Try going to Settings->General->Date and Time (or something similar), and then change the time and back again, and hope that resets it somehow. If it doesn't work, I'm afraid you might have to do a clean restore.
Restoring does nothing. The way I fixed this problem in the past was by jailbreaking the phone and changing the settings in SBSettings but I am not aware if there is a jailbreak out for the iPhone 4 yet.
In theory, I could jailbreak it change the settings back to the original and then restore it. It worked on old iPhone.
Make sure you're doing a completely full restore (put it into restore or DFU mode if necessary) and not just a restore to factory settings.
I fixed it. What I did was simple.
First I took my contacts and synced them to the computer. Then I took my old 3G and set it up as new iPhone running 3.1.3 then synced the contacts and made a backup of that iPhone. This backup would be time buy free. Then I restored my iPhone 4 on that backup. Presto! problem solved.
Good job
