A hospital has launched an investigation after a newborn baby was given an overdose of a tuberculosis vaccine.
The boy, who was born on February 5, was injected with 0.5mg of the BCG vaccine - 10 times the usual 0.05mg dose, lawyers for his family said.
A statement from law firm Irwin Mitchell said the boy is now being treated with help from the poisons agency and an expert in immunology at Sheffield Children's Hospital.
A spokesman for Scunthorpe General Hospital said it had launched a "full investigation".
Speaking on behalf of the family, who wish to remain anonymous, David Body, a medical law specialist at Irwin Mitchell, said: "This is a difficult time for the baby's family.
"Their baby is receiving treatment for TB, which has its own side-effects, but they are hopeful that the treatment will be successful with no long-term damage to their baby's health.
"However, this case raises important questions about basic systems in hospitals to ensure the safe administration of drugs, including vaccines."
Simon Rigg, a spokesman for Scunthorpe General Hospital, said authorities would keep in touch with the family for as long as the investigation lasted, which at present was unknown.
He said: "We launched a full investigation as soon as we found out about the incident.
"That investigation is ongoing and we will continue to keep the parents informed as to the progress of that investigation."
I actually can't think of a good pun at the moment, hold on...

It looks like a doctor is about to get the needle over this.
Ah fuck, I tried. :v:
That doctor was a prick...
That must've been a real jab in the ribs for the medical community.
Looks like this kids health was vacc-seen but not heard
Sucks for the baby, how the hell did that must vaccine wind up being injected?
Sucks for the baby, how the hell did that must vaccine wind up being injected?
what
Damn it can't people just double check how much vaccine they put into a needle before giving it to a patient? Never mind a baby, they're a lot more fragile then a grown boy. Idiots...
So the baby has tuberculosis now?
Why wasn't it vaccinated?
:frown:
I TOLD YOU GUSY VACCINES KILL PEOPLE THIS IS WHYT I DONT VACINEATE MY KIDS ITZA CONSPIRACY AUTISM ETC IS TRUE.
:saddowns:
Seems like his immune system is pierced.

palin 2012 IF WE EVE NLIVE THAT LONG
This is more common than you'd think. Labels on vials of injection drugs given to children are often very similar to those given to adults. There was a shitstorm recently over a baby being given an adult dose of Heparin instead of a child dose.
And I thought I had it bad when the girl at In n Out got my order wrong.
People make mistakes, it's natural, why is this even in the news? This happens about once a week. It's just that some parents think that they have to make a big deal out it just for their child.
The babies condidion remains TB seen.
The babies condidion remains TB seen.
nope he's dead
fucking decimals.
I honestly don't see anything spectacular about this. A doctor fucked up and grabbed the wrong syringe, and because of that mistake his patient died.
Not dead yet.

Bad reading.
Can the puns please stop? They were never funny, and they're even worse now (thanks for bolding and italicizing your shitty pun, because I was too dense to see it!).
I can't breath a funny pun to life, sorry.
I don't get it. Some one tries to make a pun about a girl who shot herself and everyone gets pissed at him. Some one makes a pun about a baby that was injected with too much vaccine and they get funnies. I don't even think the puns are all that good, and I don't see the point. Plus, most of it is just bandwagoning after the first 1 or 2 people give a guy a funny or a dumb.
Some times a situation is not right for puns
usually that isn't the case

They don't treat dead people.

This kid didn't die like the girl did.
Also, welcome to Facepunch, please take your seat. News puns are the norm here.

I especially like how when they assume something out of nowhere, they don't get bad readings, but when I assume something based on a comment in the thread, I get bad readings.
