The prime minister of Iceland has resigned - the first major casualty of the Panama Papers leaks which have shed an embarrassing spotlight on the world of offshore finance. The leaks, from Panama law firm Mossack Fonseca, showed PM Sigmundur Gunnlaugsson owned an offshore company, Wintris, with his wife. He was accused of concealing millions of dollars worth of family assets. A big protest was held in front of parliament in Iceland on Monday. Reports suggest the agriculture minister will be the new PM. Dozens of high-profile global figures are named in the huge Mossack Fonseca leak. Mr Gunnlaugsson had earlier called on the President Olafur Ragnar Grimsson to dissolve parliament, but that was refused.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-35966412
Guess he couldn't really refuse to resign after 10% of the entire population started protesting in the streets
Didn't he say a couple of days ago he wouldn't resign :v:
What of his threads to dissolve parliament? Just threats..?
Now just release all the dirt that was undoubtedly found out about American and European business magnates and politicians so we can force reform across the board and not just in select cases like Iceland. But good. At least this guy is no longer holding office in a country he's not paying his fair share of taxes to.
What of his threads to dissolve parliament? Just threats..?
no call to dissolve parliament was ever not entertained when put to the question in the national assembly of Iceland. The President told him not a chance until he had agreement from the other players in the Icelandic political scene.
Now that's a way to admit fault. Pretty insane how big the web of money/tax fraud is. this whole leak with Panama Papers is a good example of putting information out there that needs to be known
i wonder how it feels to be the guy who made many politicians around the world fear getting caught and caused the prime minister of a whole goddamn country to resign
i wonder how it feels to be the guy who made many politicians around the world fear getting caught and caused the prime minister of a whole goddamn country to resign
and then whoever they are, they turn up dead shot several times in the back and then it gets ruled as a suicide :downs:
Didn't he say a couple of days ago he wouldn't resign :v:
Well yeah, but then huge protests happened so he really had no choice
Didn't he say a couple of days ago he wouldn't resign :v:
I think he was confident that he would either remain in office, or at least bring down whole of parliament by getting it dissolved by introducing the motion of no confidence. The protests didnt help matters either, and when his position was completely undermined by the president refusing to back up his request to dissolve parliament, he cut his losses and resigned.
I'm sure he'll have plenty of time to think about what he did wrong in retirement with his millions.
I am glad that the Panama Papers resulted in its first tangible action just days after its first leak. I will look forward for more to come in the coming months.
Can't wait for those leakers to feel the full force of the blow and the wealthy tax evaders get away with it, as always
He was dead the second he walked out of that interview.
Which makes you wonder if it can ever be replicated. It only happened because the interview was coincidentally-timed— and the PM had no chance whatsoever to prepare a response. He was ambushed and couldn't improvise.
What are the chances of an election being called sooner than in 2017? Really curious about if the Pirate Party will actually get 36% of the vote. Holy shit that would be strange and great at the same time.

Gotta admit, never seen a PM being this panicky.
and then whoever they are, they turn up dead shot several times in the back and then it gets ruled as a suicide :downs:
there's just a small note left next to him "oops i fell on some bullets"
I still find the irony incredibly amazing, that the country which lead the charge against the 'big bad bankers' has had its own PM implicated in dodgy financial business.
The Pirate Party? Iceland sounds awesome
Kinda funny how they started out in Sweden but are pretty much dead here now and succeeding in Iceland.
It exists in the US too.
Apparently it's international. I just looked it up. Theyre all about copyright reform and free knowledge :v:
