Hey everyone, so I was just cleaning out my computer, took out the ram sticks as well and put them back in. When I went to start my computer it wasn't displaying anything, so I assumed it was RAM since everything else looked fine. After a couple of times fiddling with the sticks it still wouldn't start up. I went ahead and tried to put one of the ram sticks in the black DIMM slot, (My motherboard is an ASUS P7h55m PRO http://www.asus.com.au/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1156/P7H55M_PRO/#specifications) since the motherboard has 4 DIMM slots, 2 blue and 2 black. After starting up I noticed the ram stick that was in the black slot started to emit smoke, my computer was on for about 15 seconds before I did a forced shutdown. After being an idiot I noticed that I didn't fully put in the ram sticks and everything works fine now. Should I be concerned about the smoke? Did I damage it? I probably am going to run MemTest but I really am worried that something bad could happen. It LOOKS fine, and my BIOS detects both of my RAM sticks. I really don't know what to do.
Uhh, smoke is always bad. I would advise running Memtest and seeing whether you have ragged up the stick or not.
I don't even understand how you did that, but I'd seriously consider RMA'ing that before anything else happens.
I just ran MemTest and it didn't report a single error. I have no idea what to do. What can be the worst case scenario?
How long did you leave Memtest on for?
About 15 minutes.
You was just tripping.
Okay guys, I managed to take a picture of one of the ram sticks and I found where the problem is: I ran memtest for 1 hour 15 minutes and I had no errors whatsoever. Does that look bad? Sorry for the huge image
RMA it.
Lmao, you got lucky. Usually a memory slot mishap ends up burning out the RAM and the slot on the board. I would not use that RAM any further though, if a Vcc line comes in contact with some bus line while the machine is on, it can fry shit.
Thanks bohb, going to go ahead and buy a new kit and leave the other stick as a backup. Thanks everyone!
