• Rockstar: "future updates may not be possible on last generation hardware"
lthough Rockstar Games is currently committed to supporting the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Grand Theft Auto V, released in September 2013, there may come a point in the future when updates to the game are only technically possible for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC editions of the game. As part of Rockstar's latest Asked & Answered feature, a fan asked if the fact that GTA V is now available for new consoles means old-generation players will be left out in the cold. Rockstar said "certainly not," pointing to major features such as Heists and the new Christmas-themed update as examples of cross-generation support. However, like first-person mode, some future GTA V features may only be possible on the latest versions of the game, Rockstar said. "We are incredibly thankful to our original generation of GTA V and GTA Online players on those systems and wish to continue providing content to them for as long as we can," the developer explained. "Of course, at some point in the future, there may be a point where we reach the limits for the previous generation of consoles as there may be some updates that are only technically possible on the new hardware--but we do hope to continue delivering as many updates as we can for all four consoles for as long as possible."
Source: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/future-gta-5-updates-may-not-be-possible-on-xbox-3/1100-6424318/ I understand why they sold GTA V on previous generation three months before the new consoles came out but I just wish they skipped it entirely. GTA V would have been one hell of a reason for people to jump onto new hardware and I'm sure it would have sold well, maybe not as well but well. Just seems like a waste of time now that updates might not be coming to it. The sooner we phase out the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, the better.
snip, see second post
I don't have they money to buy an xbox 1 though and I don't want to buy it just to have a better uptdated gta v.
"we dont want to add heists to previous generation consoles because reasons"
Except they are getting heists. Rockstar is saying that eventually supporting older consoles will just not be possible due to limitations of said older consoles.
the difference between selling 35 million units and 6 is kind of fucking magnificent.
You're using existing numbers. Imagine if GTAV was next gen exclusive from the start, I'm pretty damn sure that would have made sales go up a lot higher than they are now. Why didn't you?
people still use last gen outside of not being able to afford current gen?
people still use last gen outside of not being able to afford current gen?
I'm saving up for a PS4, but there are still a few games that I never got around to playing. I never did play Vanquish, so I'll probably grab that if it ever goes up on a PSN sale. Btw you forgot your source OP.
people still use last gen outside of not being able to afford current gen?
i use my PS3 because there are games on it that i still want to play. the backlogs for either console are massive and have greatly influenced the current generation, so it's still worth it to go back and play those games. Gears of War, for example, pretty much set the standard for third person shooters for an entire generation of consoles. That in and of itself is ridiculous.
people still use last gen outside of not being able to afford current gen?
Because everyone was too scared to make next gen exclusives for some reason. GTAV being a next gen exclusive would be the push people need to get on. We're going to be in 2015 and The Phantom Pain, a major AAA 2015 title is being released on a console that was released in November of 2005.
I picked up a playstation 3 for the sole purpose of playing grand theft auto five. I didn't want to shell out the extra 200$ just for a play station four.
Except they are getting heists. Rockstar is saying that eventually supporting older consoles will just not be possible due to limitations of said older consoles.
That's pretty cool if it ends up being the case, I'm pretty used to just seeing other devs use convenient excuses with their games so I just automatically assumed they were using the same type of reasoning here The only thing I noticed at the end of the new trailer was how PC just had the letters "PC" for their logo meanwhile everything else had their shiny logos :v:
"we dont want to add heists to previous generation consoles because reasons"
Heists WILL be released on last gen, they already confirmed that and the trailer's end also does. This probably means some content that is way too big for it too handle; after all, Rockstar did say they had plans to add Liberty City and possibly others to GTA:Online, and that would be impossible in last gen without sacrificing many features.
people still use last gen outside of not being able to afford current gen?
The game selection for 360 and PS3 is so much better than the new gen consoles at the moment. For a lot of those people who are sticking behind while the new ones release games, they don't have a huge reason to switch if they don't value graphics as much as others. Hell, I've even sold a few 360's in the last couple of weeks. Of course, the performance is much better on both the One and the PS4 but even with the holiday bundles my store and others have, the draw isn't large enough yet to pull the millions of consumers (total sales figs. since release are 84mil and ~82.3mil for 360 and PS3 respectively, 5.1 and 13.5 million for One and PS4 respectively) who are still behind a generation. EDIT: Also, price is an issue but the One is dropping in price and becoming more affordable (the holiday ACU bundle was 399.99 for us this xmas, while the GTAV/Last of Us bundle for PS4 was 449.99) Source: Work at Gamestop + Wikipedia for sales figs
You had 8 years to save since the release of the PS3/360. Why didn't you?
Quite honestly one of the dumbest posts I've ever seen. You know most of us have things other than games/consoles to spend our money on; things like food, clothes, medicine, bills, rent, education and fuel to name but a few. This is emphasised given how expensive all these things are becoming. But I suppose none of this bothers you when you beg for Mummy's credit card whenever you want something.

Huge crowds and almost everyone had a Xbox One in their hands from the 3 or 4 bundles they had.
not only is the price of a current gen console a factor, but also the reliability ill wait for a late gen model of any of the consoles before i buy it, already hearing about pisspoors and bones breaking already
anyone who buys a gen 1 version of any console is a big dummy. why buy now when they're the most expensive, have the least games, have the smallest memory capacity (which might not be applicable with this generation but was for the last one), and are most prone to failure? buying in early makes sense with quite a few things in life, but with videogame consoles it's not worth it at all.

oh cmon, i specially upgraded my hard drive
You're using existing numbers. Imagine if GTAV was next gen exclusive from the start, I'm pretty damn sure that would have made sales go up a lot higher than they are now.
If you legitimately think that every single person who bought GTA V for the PS3 or 360 would have bought a PS4 or xbox one just to buy GTA V as well you are very confused or very dumb. Rockstar is in the business of selling games, not selling consoles. They're going to target the platforms that will allow them to sell the most games. I have a feeling the people calling the shots at Rockstar actually do market research and base these kinds of decisions on real data and not just teenage whimsy
have the smallest memory capacity (which might not be applicable with this generation but was for the last one),
I'm actually curious about what we'll see myself. We had a 1TB drive for the COD: Advanced Warfare bundle we sold, but for the rest (stock + AC:U) they're 500gb and we dont have external hd's yet
there are better things to spend frivolously on than consoles that arent that reliable yet
That's subjective. If he really wants those games ASAP, then that's what he wants.
The sooner we phase out the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, the better.
I'd buy a PS4/Xbone in a heartbeat if one of them dropped the subscription requirement for multiplayer. I generally only play on consoles in short bursts which means I'd be paying about £50 per year for only a couple of weeks worth of play.
You're using existing numbers. Imagine if GTAV was next gen exclusive from the start, I'm pretty damn sure that would have made sales go up a lot higher than they are now.
No. People like me who were only able to scrounge up enough to upgrade from PS2 to PS3 10 months or so ago would have been unable to buy it.
You had 8 years to save since the release of the PS3/360. Why didn't you?
Yeah lemme just ignore all the brake parts/tires my cars need, my mortgage, food bills, electricity, something like that in order to save up for a console that isn't even on the fucking drawing board yet. You make no sense. Did you even think for one millisecond about what you just said? Or are you one of those 'oh I'm rich I don't have to worry about choosing between $500 entertainment equipment and having a house to live in' types that's never known the threat of forecloser and never had to be told 'I'm sorry but we can't afford that' in the toy section of the grocery store?

He is either 13 years old and begs his mother and gets spoilt. Or was born into money and doesn't understand the real value of money or the worries that come around from not being privileged with rich upbringings.

Why save up for a next gen console, when you have PC?
