OTTAWA – Former finance minister Jim Flaherty has passed away.
Police and paramedics were gathered Thursday around a downtown Ottawa condominium.
The House of Commons immediately suspended business.
Flaherty, 64, had been battling a rare skin condition, but insisted upon his surprise resignation last month that his health was not a contributing factor in his decision to step down. He had stayed on as the MP for Whitby-Oshawa, but was not planning to seek re-election.
The former minister was discovered with no vital signs.
A statement from his wife and family was released Thursday afternoon, saying “Christine Elliott and her triplet sons, John, Galen and Quinn would like to make Canadians aware that her beloved husband and father passed away peacefully today in Ottawa.
This is insane. He only resigned a month ago and now this. He was one of the major players in keeping the Canadian economy mostly stable and put the government on track to balance the budget. RIP.
Hooooly shit. That was completely unexpected.
This is a shock, I didn't even know he was ill.

He had a rare skin condition, but his family said he died of a massive heart attack.
A shame it happened so soon after his resignation as finance minister. He certainly deserved a break for all the work he had done for our economy.
EDIT: His last tweet

It seems like just yesterday that he stepped down.
Damn. A Canadian icon. RIP.
Heard this on the news. It hurts more because he was stepping down to spend more time with his family... Rest in peace!
