[UK] Jeremy Corbyn pledges to introduce opt-out organ donor register
The organ donor register will automatically opt everyone in unless they say they want to be out. That rule is already in place in Wales, but the change wouldn't apply in Scotland, which has a separate health service.
"There are more than 5,000 people on organ transplant waiting lists, but a shortage of donors means that in recent years only 3,500 of them get the life-saving treatments they need," Mr Corbyn said. "The law has already been changed in Wales under Carwyn Jones’s leadership, and today I make the commitment a Labour government will do the same for England."
It should have been an opt out system from the start anyway.
I am completely fine with this. With all those valuable, still potentially functional organs being left to rot or be incinerated, it's been a wide gaping maw of biological wastage for organ donation to have been opt-in all this time.
It should have been an opt out system from the start anyway.
Exactly, which is why I'm so glad he's added it to the manifesto
Organ donation is the sort of thing that is vitally important for national healthcare, but is also ignored or barely thought about by most.
It's real dumb. Should have always been opt-out; we don't need people's apathy and laziness about signing up preventing the saving of lives. If you ask me, there are no good reasons to not donate your useful body parts if they are healthy, you'll be dead after all.
It's a good idea, Ive always thought that an opt out system would simply be common sense.
Anyone who strongly objects to donating their organs will take the time to opt out- if you didn't care about the issue enough to even consider whether you were donating your organs or not, then would you really care if they went to someone else after you died?
I would prefer to err on the side that will help save lives rather than the one that leaves healthy organs to rot while people die waiting for transplants.
Yeah, i'm opting out. Otherwise, what will i fill my canopic jars with?

Bloody Corbyn trying to make sure we fail the weighing of our hearts by Anubis so we can't dwell in the realm of Osiris!

I've heard he's a Hittite sympathiser

That'd have been incredibly hard to justify to people pre-information age, and would've been incredibly unpopular with significant groups of people.

From an American standpoint the people that don't register where I'm from as organ doners fit into either the group of conspiracy theorists that believe a doctor would let them die in the hospital so he could sell their organs on the black market, or extremely religious folk that don't believe they'll get into heaven if their body is tampered with.
Australia needs this, so many people are too lazy or just forget to opt in
What if the dead become angered and come back for what is rightfuly theirs?
Disagree.
I support organ donation.
I'm registered. They can take everything.
I do NOT support the government "owning" my body by default.
It opens up a can of ethical worms. We might see doctors "encouraged" to let patients die for their organs for other patients, or people being less concerned about saving a patients life compared to recovering the body for organs, etc. Guy dies with no identification in a auto wreck or something? Pull 'em in, cut out his organs. "We can't prove he wanted to opt out."
It's just a slippery slope. My state can't even manage a fucking DMV. Our governor vetoed the budget and is going bankrupt. How can I trust these inept guys to manage my body after my death if I opt out? Who says they won't just say "Ah, fuck it." and do it anyway? Again, if they can't even manage a budget or DMV, or firearm registry, can I expect them to handle a database of people who opt out?
I live in Connecticut. "My" (I didn't vote for him.) rep proposed this legislation for my state.
If such a thing came to pass, I'm opting out just to spite them.
Government should NOT be "automatically" signing people up for organ donation. It's MY body, the burden of "proof" should be on the government to check if I'm signed up, NOT on me to opt out.
We should be encouraging organ donation. I'd gladly give up a kidney right now, while alive, for a couple grand. Sadly doing so violates some organ trafficking law in my country, ironically introduced by one of my rep's ancestors. [One of the Kennedy's.]

funny how the solution to all of this is to simply opt out
The UK is wobbling around with Brexit and shit, but they're not nearly as insane as the US so you can put those conspiracy theories back in the box.
If you make it opt-in, you instantly slash participation by at least half. That's why people needing organ transplants typically have to wait months and a significant number die before the waitlist catches up to them.
Besides, you're dead, you don't need those lungs and heart anymore and they could be in perfect condition, allowing someone else to live thanks to you. And if you're not okay with this, opt out. If your religious beliefs forbid this, your spiritual community will probably be very strident about reminding people to opt out.
Your slippery slope assumes the system is suddenly going to go into dystopian scifi. The fact that your home state is being run by fucktards is something happening to your state, not a global epidemic.
This sounds like a good idea, too bad it's suggested by such a garbage politician
This sounds like a good idea, too bad it's suggested by such a garbage politician
So because it is, in your opinion, suggested by a "garbage" politician, it is completely invalidated? Motherfucking Donald Trump could have suggested this and even I would have said "huh, good on him for suggesting that."

When did I say it's invalidated? The problem is that it'll be part of a package of policies that Corbyn will want to implement and a lot of his other policies are shit.

And if they fuck it up?
I needed a dental crown done. The shitty Husky State Insurance fucked it up, waiting and waiting for approval, until it snapped at the gum line from a lost filling that wasn't replaced because they had to resubmit the forms. I had to get it extracted as about a month later we kept getting led in circles with the various hotlines.
We had ballots run out repeatedly at polling places, which resulted in all kinds of shit.
I can go on and on.
What if my organs are taken against my will due to a "mistake" with the database? Granted I'm dead but I do not like the idea of the government owning my body or parts thereof.
It's my body, I should have to give permission for the government to take it. Not the other way around.
Again, ENCOURAGE donation. I'd honestly consider giving up a kidney or chunk of liver if I were compensated.
Ironically since compensation is illegal, all it does is encourage black market organ harvesting.
If I had the option to donate them for money because I'm poor as fuck, I'd rather have 'em out in a sterile operating room with trained surgeons, then seek out some back ally "doctor".
Just encourage and compensate donation and organ stock will rise. People will be signing up if there were more benefits to it.

I'm sure your dead body will have a great case against the government for accidentally saving other peoples' lives.

Perhaps you should just opt out then?
Doctors aren't going to kill you or let you die so that they can harvest your organs Lmao, least of all in the UK NHS. There would be little incentive to do so in a scenario where organ donation would be opt-out anyway because there would already be enough organs to go around.
And as for mismanagement, Worst case scenario is someone's life gets saved by mistake. Oh no!.
Maybe it's just me but I feel that saving people's lives is a little more important than some warm fuzz about the government not ~owning your body~.

Wtf are you talking about Corbyn is a total babe.
When did I say it's invalidated? The problem is that it'll be part of a package of policies that Corbyn will want to implement and a lot of his other policies are shit.
His policies are a hundredfold better than whatever the hell the tories are trying to do. At least he is trying to make things better, unlike the tories.
His policies are a hundredfold better than whatever the hell the tories are trying to do. At least he is trying to make things better, unlike the tories.
Now that's just dishonest. The Tories are trying to make everything better*, strong and stable and all of that.
* For themselves and the top 1%
His policies are a hundredfold better than whatever the hell the tories are trying to do. At least he is trying to make things better, unlike the tories.
That's unfair, I'm sure the Tories have a crack team working on switching the definitions of better and worse, so they can claim to be making things better, as we speak.

Wow y'all are owning the shit out of this guy who has specifically cited concerns of bureaucratic ineptitude voiding his opting out of the program.
If you don't trust the government to respect your wishes maybe you should fill out the government form where you state your wishes???? r e k t

Its just such a small risk with really small problems when compared in scope to the number of lives it will save
I'm going to opt out because of my beliefs. I expect I'll get treated like Satan Junior for this, but honestly my organs aren't any good anyway with the amount I drink.
When did I say it's invalidated? The problem is that it'll be part of a package of policies that Corbyn will want to implement and a lot of his other policies are shit.
Elaborate?
This made me remember that I opted out when I first applied for my photo ID, so I just went on Pendot's website and updated my record to opt in
