A mob of Indian workers has beaten the CEO of a jute factory to death in a dispute over increasing their working hours, police told the AP news agency after arresting six workers.
Four suspects were arrested on Sunday, followed by two on Monday, and are expected to be charged with murder, vandalism and other crimes.
A group of 200 workers, wielding iron rods and stones, stormed the office of 60-year-old HK Maheswari in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal, according to Sunil Chowdhury, the Hooghly district superintendent.
I'm sure I've seen stories like this before, I'm guessing this is semi-common in India.
Doesn't surprise me too much considering how workers are treated over there.
Maheswari had denied their earlier request to work and be paid for 40 hours a week at the North Brook Jute Mill, instead of the current norm of 25.
He had also proposed shutting down the mill for three days a week to limit mounting financial losses, according to the factory's general manager, Kiranjit Singh.
Now they won't work or get paid at all
So I take it the Highlander rule doesn't apply here? /s
Guess that's what happens when people get beyond fed up with sub-human working conditions, you drive them to the edge and are surprised when they turn around and try to kill you instead of jump off?

Another option instead of killing someone is quitting

This was due to a lack of working hours, which was due to the company losing money and being unable to pay them to work extra hours, or just not having the work load available to utilize more hours of work, not because they were being overworked.
Though I don't know what kind of conditions they were working in, I wouldn't fault anyone for assuming that their working conditions are worse than they actually are though, given the hazardous working conditions of many 3rd world workers.
Well, they got what they wanted plus more. With a murder charge they don't have to worry about working another day in their lives.

not usually an option where thanks to collusion they probably would be blacklisted from other factories

There isn't any blacklisting as such - the folks that work in these places are typically daily-wagers, guys who don't have much by way of official employment documentation.
For context, West Bengal is actually one of the worst places to set up a factory, because worker-level goon-ism is very strong. Political and government interference has led to many industrialists leaving the state with major losses.
This happened back in 2014, why is this getting posted now?

oh fuck I'm a dipshit and didn't notice that
i just saw it linked on twitter and assumed it was new
my bad
That's downright Shakespearean.
I think this is another reason why it's important to have (government-regulated?) unions which actually have some level of sway, it makes mob 'justice' less likely (there's a reason why the victims of the crime don't server as the judge or jury in most countries). It sounds like the dude was probably a shitty boss, but that doesn't justify what these workers did. It's a cycle of awfulness, with disproportionate retribution.
