Cloud Imperium's space combat and exploration sim Star Citizen recently surpassed $35 million in funding, unlocking the fan voted Drake Herald ship, developer Chris Roberts announced in an official blog post.
Featuring advanced encryption software and an armored computer core, the Drake Herald is designed to get sensitive information from point A to B. The small yet heavily armored ship flaunts a "redundant power subsystems and EMP shielding, and a high-powered broadcast array for data transmission."
i gotta say i am going to love this, i loved starlancer and freelancer as well as privateer.
OK for real now a game does not need this much money.

I want to agree with you, but most AAA titles usually take about $50 million to make as far as I know.
If someone can prove me otherwise ill be happy.
To put it in perspective, Halo 3 cost around $34 million to develop (counting for inflation).
I really hope the devs can live up to the expectations and actually make 35+ million dollars worth of game

no

GTA 5 cost around 265 million so there's that, Start Citizen using 35 million is nothing.
hahahaha, whether it will live up to hype aside, this is awesome
it's a space game with realistic/niche characteristics set on a large scale with multiplayer funded as much as a lot of AAA games. how cool is that?

Most of that budget would go into marketing

Is that counting how much it cost to manufactor the Arcade cabinets?
i really, REALLY hope this game doesn't end up sucking or it could really hurt the idea of crowdfunding
Most of that budget would go into marketing

It lists how much development, advertising, and manufactering cast separately
In other words no you are still very wrong
GTA V cost more than 100 million in development alone
This game now has a budget that puts it into the AAA league. And should be judged as so. It has more of a budget than episode one and two together, and the original left 4 dead.

Doesn't that include hiring big names and a fuckton if marketing though
Do we really need to have a thread every time it reaches a funding milestone?

i for one appreciate it

AAA titles are not funded by random people contributing minute amounts at a time
[editline]e[/editline]
the difference between Star Citizen garnering 35 mil and a big-name-company garnering 35 mil is that the big name company already HAS that money to spend
Star Citizen is crowdfunded, meaning they don't have to pay a single dollar out of pocket because the cash is provided by everyone else
does that mean they don't need the money? i mean no, because it does take a lot to make a video game on the scale that they're talking, but at the same time you have to think about just how much of that actually is their money and how much of it came from other people
Half the time when a dev gets a budget of this size they primarily use it for rapid asset creation to decrease development time (as well as marketing if they're smart).
Whether the game will actually be good or not doesn't necessarily depend on the budget.
i for one appreciate it
You'd love their website with on the fly updates of their funding then
Considering Star Citizen is huge, it kind of makes sense.
I just hope it lives up to that.
If this game is a flop I am going to legitimately cry. That would make my $200 internet spaceship worthless ;-;
-snip-, missed a post.
And next car game sits there with a failed kickstarter :(
Seriously its sad the flatout series were this underrated.
I don't understand why this game has gotten so much attention. It looks okay I guess but 35 million dollars?

Back when the reveal trailer came out, the only other things comparable to it were the X series and EVE. Star Citizen promised to focus more on the combat and smaller clans, things which neither game really do right.
Plus, it's made by Chris Roberts who made the Wing Commander series. People (me included) trust him enough that even if the multiplayer were to be a spectacular disappointment, the singleplayer would still be good no matter what.
So this game makes $35 million while Reset is having problems even reaching the €65,000 goal.

Hasn't been a game like this since Freelancer came out and that game still has a sizable active community. It's a genre with games in very short supply.

puzzle games are unpopular

I think on top of it being made by Chris Roberts and being one of the first space sims to start popping up more recently is that it's aiming to really focus on the ships detail.
They're going to have full interiors to walk around, so you feel more like a pilot flying his ship rather than just flying a model of a ship around. That's really what is keeping the crowdfunding going, people want to start off with a cool ship as it's a much more integral part of the game and will really shape how the game is played for you.
Plus being able to have multiple players aboard larger ships and working together is something many people are excited for and want to do from the get go. I'm interested in seeing how the larger capital ships turn out.

That's because Reset is an artsy "walking simulator" which doesn't go over well with most gamers.

Reset looks like it has a nice art direction and the potential for a good story. But the puzzle mechanic isn't interesting. I've played games like it before and it's not fun.

Those puzzles always get unecessarily complicated really quickly
It's never going to stop, world economy is going to collapse because no one has enough money to buy food because they gave it all to Star Citizen.
