MOSCOW — Russia said Thursday it had doubled the number of troops taking part in mass drills ordered by President Vladimir Putin this week to 80,000 in a major show of strength amid tensions with the West over Ukraine.
Putin on Monday ordered drills for more than 40,000 troops in regions spanning the country, from the Arctic to the far east to the volatile southern Caucasus, and ordered nuclear bomber jets to be deployed in Crimea a year after its annexation by Moscow.
Russia's chief of the general staff, Valery Gerasimov, said Thursday that the "number of troops taking part in the exercises has gone up to 80,000, and the number of aircraft has increased to 220," quoted by RIA Novosti state news agency.
Troops in the western and central regions and military aircraft were scrambled for exercises, Gerasimov said.
The drills are the latest in a succession of large-scale military maneuvers that Moscow has ordered as relations with the West have plunged to a post-Cold War low over the crisis in Ukraine.
Ukraine and its Western allies have accused Moscow of pouring thousands of troops over the border to spearhead a pro-Russian uprising aimed at halting Kiev's pivot towards Europe and the United States. Moscow denies the allegations.
Russia said Thursday that thousands of troops had launched war games on the remote Pacific island of Sakhalin close to Japan.
Moscow has deployed "more than 3,000 troops and up to 1,000 units of weaponry and equipment" to Sakhalin, including Osa ground-to-air missile systems and tanks, the defence ministry said.
Russia held triumphant celebrations this week to commemorate a year since it annexed Crimea in a takeover blasted by Kiev and the West as an illegal land grab.
The latest exercises include the deployment of Tupolev nuclear-capable bomber jets to Crimea, where Russia has said it wants to permanently station the long-range bombers in 2016.

"""""""""""Exercises"""""""""""
Its just in time with your jet fighters landing in Estonia.
I'm not even saying about the fact that we station your troops.
You're on the same level as Russia now, except less sanctioned.
Why are people starting to become conspiracy nutters? Im sure it's pretty normal to have an army exercise
Then Russia mustn't have any pants
Probably has something to do with Putin invading another sovereign country. Honestly what do you expect, if the US or china did that it would be the same.
Russia's been on the news only because of the Crimea takeover and Ukraine, and besides, if a country took a region then moved up near three important countries for a military exercise wouldn't you be at least concerned?

Well you werent concerned about every single military drill since 2000, why start now?
If anyone honestly believes Russia wants to invade anything they need help. Or stop buying into fearmongering and read up on the situation.
The reason people go "oh it's an 'exercise' alright" is because Russia has a history of using military exercises to mobilize large amounts of troops without outright calling it a general mobilization for the purpose of invasions. This is what happened with Ukraine and the Crimea, but on a much smaller scale. Small scale exercises on the border allowed Russia to funnel equipment into the area, and also gave them an excuse as to why troops were suddenly dying.
It's not just Russia doing it either. A lot of countries have historically used military exercises as a prelude to an invasion. This fear isn't limited to the West. You don't have to go very far back in history to read about how the Soviet Union was very concerned about Able Archer 83.

That would be a perfectly reasonable statement had Putin not Blatantly annexed Crimea and invaded a huge portion of the country.
Or had Georgia incident not happened
I think you need help, you're just a blind nationalist

I'm not biased at all.
you'll be saying that when the Russians annex your country. Come on, now.

What makes you so sure Russians are going to annex Estonia (or UK if you go by current location)?
Well you werent concerned about every single military drill since 2000, why start now?
Because up until 2014 those military drills didn't include illegal annexation of territory.
It'd be nice if Russia and NATO got together for a wargame.
Then again a lot of 'accidents' would probably happen.

if NATO and your big words have any value behind them, you will valiantly defend my country (which I do not even hold dear, mind you) with the troops you have stationed in our country, along with a lot of other NATO members.
Why is everything Russia does news now?

Deal with it. Your country is going to be centre stage on the news for the next year or so.
