My friend decided to make a custom computer. He didn't put that much research into it, but he did have a large budget. This is what he selected.
Case

CPU

CPU cooler

RAM

2x GPU
http://www.guruht.com/2011/01/asus-hd-6970-directcu-ii-require-three.html
Mobo
http://www.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=FpufhQASBFHNvccl
PSU
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153119
HDD
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136284
And some fan controller and a DVD drive
He is clearly a superb computer builder.
(I told him to drop one of the Graphics cards and get a SSD drive for the OS, but he says that they are useless and he wants better graphics in his game. Then I facepalmed as he displayed 3x4GB Three-channel Ram sticks while his Mobo only had room for 2x dual channel. He says the 12 GB at 1600 Ram sticks for 180 was a wicked deal.)
Oh, heres one of his comments:
"NOOO SSDs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! IM GOING DUAL 6970 FOR A REASONNN!!!!! AND NO IM NOT GETTING TRIPLE DISPLAY! NO EYEFINITY! WHAT DO YOU THINK IM GONNA BUY THREE FREAKIN ASUS VH266H's 3 x $350, yeh ill just spend $1000+ on three monitors i wont use just to make you happy... Not even worth it. Plus this MOBOs got a third PCI-E Another year down the road when the 6970 is 200$, ill buy a third and TRUST ME, this system will destroy whatever you've got. Might even have like 4 x 1TB drives in RAID 0.... but no SSDs! EVER!"
Right, so what is he going to use the PC for? and what is his budget? because he can do better for less money.
lol Newegg.ca, Newegg.com, Tigerdirect.com
DUAL 6970S lol don't mess with him he knows what he's doing
My bad, he had a list of items, I just found links to each item to make it easier for you guys. He isnt buying from those sites.
But yeah, hes hitting around 2k already.
Is it right to say that the bottle-neck of the system is now the Ram? or could you rig a triple-channel ram to work as dual channel? Or is he going to be running single channel because of the mixup?
Edit: Hes making it a gaming rig.
Your friend is a tool. 12GB of RAM? Dual 6970's? Core i7-2600k? 1200W PSU? Is he like adding the most expensive or highest number related item on each shopping page into his basket and calling it a day?
This is completely overkill for just any gaming machine alone, he can do so much better for so much more little. This is something you would expect in server/graphic/video creating and editing...etc based PCs.
Tell him to stick to at least stick with a i5-2400 with a H67 motherboard (or i5-2500k and P67 motherboard if he intends to do some serious overclocking), 4GB of RAM, motherboard with at max 2x PCIe 2.0 x16 slots (tri-sli or crossfire scaling isn't worth the little performance gain for the major price), and 1 major gpu (in the future he can add another one in for sli/crossfire).
Try and talk a bit of sense into him, he's clearly going to waste money in one shot when he can just use the remainder of his budget on upgrading and maintaining the system-type I listed above for the next 4-5 years while playing a majority of games mostly maxed out fine.

Also lmao if one drive goes down then he's completely fucked, and he plans to have 4? He really has no idea what he's doing? Also SSDs are much better than HDDs, albeit more expensive for the price.

Nah, I told him to think about getting SSDs, when he shot that down, I told him he could possibly get some drives in raid. He assumed every drive in raid 0 is the best plan.
If he's not buying off these sites where does he live?
If he's in the US tell him he doesn't need to spend any more than $1500, if even that.

(P67 motherboard if he intends to do some serious overclocking)

I thought you couldn't overclock at all with H67 boards.
Thats why he said get a P67, because the H67 can't overclock.
At least that's what I think he was saying.
I thought you couldn't overclock at all with H67 boards.
I think his point is that if you're going to overclock, you're not going to do it for an extra 200-400MHz, and if you do, it's not worth the extra price or whatever.
Hes in Canada, and I was only guessing around 2k just by grabbing rough costs.
I thought you couldn't overclock at all with H67 boards.
It's why I mentioned the P67. H67 motherboards can overclock, but you'll only be able to increase the incredibly limited base clock around an extra 5-10 MHZ maximum regardless of an unlocked CPU or not, you cannot increase speedbins. Hence, for example, with a Core i5 2500k 3.30GHZ on an H67 board you'll only be able to reach a maximum overclock speed of 3.63GHZ (110 BCLK x 33 MULTI).
To add to that conversion
Guy 2: "Don't Like SSD's I see? Lol Why all the hate? too expensive? or is there something wrong with SSDs in general?"
Him: lol cuz he keeps bugging me to get SSD's
It not worth the money, and to be honest, load time dont matter to me a barely ever play games on my pc anyways... only on my ps3
Guy 2: "Then why the fuck would you invest in such a beafy computer?"
Me: "He buys a top of the line graphics card, and then he buys a second before even thinking about getting a SSD.
Your Hard drive reads at 80ish MB/s
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233108
This reads at 270 MB/s. Over 3 times faster than the Disk drive.
This one costs a mere 129$ for 64 GB. Enough to put your OS onto. Well worth the investment."
I think I got that right. I got the HDD speeds from a benchmark, and the SSD's speeds from newegg.
:sigh:
When does it become anarchy? I wanna smash these morons without getting into trouble. If you think two flagship cards in CFX is more helpful than an SSD boot drive then you shouldn't be touching a computer. ESPECIALLY IF YOU DONT EVEN WANT TO PLAY GAMES ON IT! I mean what the fuck?
Here he is again: "ok listen.... I DONT CARE ABOUT LOAD TIMES!
My system will beat beating the shit out of yours even without the SSDs
If i needed to i spend another 90$ taxes/shipping in, and i get another 1TB 6GB/s drive. Nearly the speed of SSDs, wayyy more capacity and very similar load times.
So you know, renderings/games dont constantly access the HDD esspecially while in game.
Ok great maybe i get a 15sec boot with SSDs yet i just simply won't be turning it off anyways. Ill always be torretning something/seeding or leaving my computer on for one reason or another..."
Also, he has triple channel Ram but dual channel slots on his motherboard. Will it be running in single channel then?
I feel for yeah Mipit
Why is it always the people who have no clue what they're doing that have the money to play around with?

I cannot click agree enough.
Also, if he has that much money to throw about, why doesn't he just buy a maximum spec Mac Pro? Would fit his stupidity level pretty well, don't you think?

Thats how you get caught..
Dual 6970s but I don't game on my computer lol that shits for NERDS I play BLOPS on my psTRIPLE woopWOOP
An EFI mobo will give you pretty nice boot times anyway. I have an MSI mobo with UEFI and it boots up lightning fast with my OS on a Spinpoint F3.
