Windows 7 runs on 55% of all the computers on the planet, but according to news this week that is actually a bad and potentially dangerous thing. Says who? Actually Microsoft...
Speaking to Windows Weekly, Microsoft Marketing chief Chris Capossela explained that users who choose Windows 7 do so “at your own risk, at your own peril” and he revealed Microsoft has concerns about its future software and hardware compatibility, security and more.
“We do worry when people are running an operating system that’s 10 years old that the next printer they buy isn’t going to work well, or they buy a new game, they buy Fallout 4, a very popular game, and it doesn’t work on a bunch of older machines,” Capossela stated. “And so, as we are pushing our ISV [Independent Software Vendor] and hardware partners to build great new stuff that takes advantage of Windows 10 that obviously makes the old stuff really bad and not to mention viruses and security problems.”
He also stressed it is “so incredibly important to try to end the fragmentation of the Windows install base” and to get users to a “safer place”.
There’s only one problem with Capossela’s statements: they are complete rubbish.
Here's the bit where Leo, Paul, and Mary talk about people refusing to upgrade:
Well maybe they dont want a repeat of everyone using windoes xp forever
They obviously don't, but statements like this so soon are absolutely stupid.
If it got to where Windows NT 4 SP6 or Windows 2000 SP4 was where they're only a year or two away from dying and security fixes start being "rework large parts of the kernel", then he would have a point. Windows 7 still has 4 years left. Windows 8.1 has until 2023.
Watch the interview, it's actually pretty great. Obviously he wouldn't go out and say that everyone should just stay on Windows 7 and call it a day, or that Microsoft is wrong to push people to upgrade.
Windows 7 is EOL in 2020, so even though Microsoft might extend the Windows 10 free offer beyond July, I think it's pretty clear what's actually best for consumers.
The quote comes after the 27:30 mark.

then try and sell windows 10 on features rather than fear
Well i dont understand the problem with windows 10, imo its the best windows yet. Problems with stuff from previous OSs not working? Maybe if people started using win10 this wouldnt be an issue
A few people have had driver issues, as well as issues with how it's features involve monitoring your activities. The former has been the leading issue, though, and is more of a case-by-case issue.

FYI The latter is application telemetry and as far as I know Opt-in. It was announced at 2015's /build conference to allow devs to collect information about how their apps are used and no one said anything then.
I think the primary problem with Windows 10 is why get it in the first place. The only thing that 10 has that 7 doesn't for me which I find really useful is better multimonitor support out of the box, but people with multiple monitors in 7 already have plenty of software available to take place of that. Really the only key difference between 7 and 10 is the Windows Store and the new app platform. But the Windows Store is just filled with garbage and WinRT can't do everything that Win32 can so really what's the point? If Microsoft wants people to move to Windows 10 then they need to really introduce some key features that people have asked for.
main reason i don't want to upgrade is i get blue screens a lot with windows 10 to be honest i am fine st icking with 7 i don't have issues with it like i do 10

I'm not gonna speak Windows 10's praises, because to be honest I agree (which is why I'm still on 8.1 for the time being). Still, DirectX 12, the new task view and all the improvements 8.1 came with basically come to mind.
Why would you upgrade from iOS 8 to iOS 9? Well, it's free and it comes with a few improvements, and I guess the rational is basically the same here.
Maybe if more stuff was supported on Windows 10 i'd do it.

what isn't supported
when will the "windows 10 is an evil spying piece of shit" meme end

When Windows stops trying to force people into Windows 10 and stops using scare tactics.
Well I'd use 10 but it crashes because of my GPU, so screw you Microsoft
I have nothing against 10, I use it and enjoy using it, but there really shouldn't be any problems like they say there are for 7 if they're still supporting it. That sounds like a failing of Microsoft rather than a failing of the software itself.

that's most likely because you did an upgrade install and kept a bunch of garbage from the previous windows installation. when I installed windows the installer was extremely bad and didn't even have the option to do a clean install so I ended up with such a broken installation that I literally couldn't open the start menu or run any setup.exe files. doing a clean install sorted everything out.
Well i dont understand the problem with windows 10, imo its the best windows yet. Problems with stuff from previous OSs not working? Maybe if people started using win10 this wouldnt be an issue
I know at least I would rather work off of a clean install and not just upgrade, but this is hard to just do when microsoft releases it.
While I understand the reasons some people don't want to upgrade to Windows 10, security is definitely not one of the things that is in Windows 7's favor against upgrading.
Mainstream support for Windows 7 ended last year, with extended (EOL) support ending in 2020. The number of exploits specific to Windows 7 is only going to continue to grow until then with very few probably patched out.
Will this effect you? Probably not, but talking from a pure technical standpoint, yes. Windows 10 is more secure than Windows 7, and will continue to be.
As for the whole "spyware" or "botnet" issues, well, you shouldn't be using Windows in the first place ya doofus. If you're that concerned about your privacy, just switch to OpenBSD already and make sure all your internet traffic is behind a reputable VPN that is based outside of the US or a US-friendly country.
Obviously, I'm not that concerned with the NSA knowing that I torrent "linux distros", which is why I'm still using Windows and Chrome.

For me it's only an evil piece of shit because of the bullshit Microsoft has been pulling with GWX.
I worry of moving to windows 10 as there are so many driver and support issues, working in the electronics industry, the amount of software and drivers out there that are unstable on the best of days... eeeh.
I've never had any major security problems using Windows 7. And Windows 8 nearly drove me bonkers. Why would I ever want to switch away from an OS that still works?

Yeah Windows 95 has been treating me well for 20 years and I ain't about to switch.
At some point improved functionality reaches critical mass. Maybe it's not Windows 10 for you, but whatever.
I've had more trouble in the time I've been using W10 than any of the previous versions. My start menu keeps randomly stopping working (have to paste some command into powershell to 'fix' it for a few days), it keeps forgetting my settings and, most annoyingly, I can't easily have a different background for each of my monitors.
I wouldn't upgrade from 7 just yet as it works fairly well, I'm sort of annoyed that I did.

If you upgraded within the last 30 days you can roll back by going to Settings > Update and security > Backup/Restore. Mind you I'm not on Windows 10, so I can't confirm, but it's in there somewhere.

Nothing at my school works right with win10 yet
Seems like 99.9 percent of issues is a result of not doing a clean install. I know in some situations you can't afford to clean install, but after updating all the PC's for myself and relatives this way we haven't had any major issues.

More like 80% unClean Install, 5% Horrible Driver Support, 5% Paranoia, 10% Angry about Pushy Microsoft.

because people can't talk about legitimate privacy issues without it being a 'meme', eh?
is talking about the nsa a meme now too?

no because the nsa is a legitimate privacy threat???
what the fuck kind of question is that. so far it hasn't been concretely proven that MS are siphoning every keypress and pixel on your screen for whatever their own "evil plan" is. much like when origin was being called out for "privacy concerns", it amounted to jack shit other than a ton of FUD and idiots misreading process monitors.
