If you're going to live in a country, please learn their language first

As a telemarketer for a charity, I call a lot of people everyday. And it pisses me to no end when I call someone and they answer and say "I don't speak English" or they answer the phone speaking Spanish. If you're going to come to America, learn English first. Every other culture knows how this works, they have come to America and integrated into society as normal people. The British, French, Chinese, Russians, Germans, and even the Bosnians have all integrated into American society. They only group that has failed to is the Mexicans. Now I understand that some Mexicans are good people and have learned English and integrated into American society, but many of them have not.
And you know that these Mexicans who don't speak English are illegal immigrants, because you have to learn English in order to become a US citizen, it's part of the citizenship test that all legal immigrants are required to take. This doesn't just go for America, it goes for all countries, please, learn the language of the country you're immigrating to. I wouldn't move to France if I didn't speak French or Japan if I didn't speak Japanese.
-The American People
Hey at least they don't call me up asking for money I don't have at odd times of the day.
ITT a racist with no knowledge of the concept of the immigrant experience speals for the "American People".
You might find it interesting to know that, at the time of our nations' inception, English only barely won out as the official language, because the vast majority of the immigrants were German. And that's why we're an English speaking people living in counties with German names.

Really? I did not know that.
if i were an immigrant i wouldnt bother to take several years learning this shitty language so i could talk to an idiot american kid without a translator
Haha. A telemarketer complaining about people? Never thought I'd see the day.
I remember when a jenova's witness come to my door and only spoke Spanish.
I kept trying to gesture for him to leave but he didn't do shit.
In many poorer countries the tools to comprehensively learn a new language such as English do not exist or are out of reach for potential immigrants. To expect them to learn English before arriving is unreasonable and ignores the situations they exist in.
lol they answer the phone in spanish probably because they live in a community that speaks mostly spanish
and if they say they don't speak english, it's probably because you are a telemarketer and nobody wants to really talk to you. when telemarketers call my house, i usually tell them "NEIN NEIN DEUTSCH BITTE!"
and also, mr "- The American People", why haven't you learned spanish even though you've communicated with mexico for over 200 years? mainland europe and parts of the UK already diligently teach german and french.
Why don't you just learn Spanish? That seems to be the direction American is heading, like it or not.
dear american people, stop complaining about language when you don't bother learning any yourself

The official language of America is English. They're allowed to speak whatever they want, but you should need to learn English to live here.

I'm reminded of William Kamkwamba, who was able to adapt technology to build a windmill that supplied his village with electricity, only he couldn't read the books he was using because he was never taught english.
The reason his story is significant is because it's not often that someone in the kind of situation you described is able to do well for themselves.

As the OP said. Would you move to Mexico without learning Spanish first?

We're not complaining the language exists, it's just most of us don't see why a whole country has to learn spanish against a couple million immigrants having to learn english.

??????
As the OP said. Would you move to Mexico without learning Spanish first?
I would, if I was going there permanently. It'd be easier for everyone. On vacation, I'd learn the simple stuff.

What English? English is used in a lot of other places than just the us. English is a very good language to learn because it is common across the world.
The official language of America is English.
nope there is no official language
As a telemarketer for a charity, I call a lot of people everyday. And it pisses me to no end when I call someone and they answer and say "I don't speak English" or they answer the phone speaking Spanish. If you're going to come to America, learn English first.
I might sympathize if you were talking about people not speaking English if they were coming to you, but you are calling them.
The only reason I rated this dumb is because you're a telemarketer complaining about other people.
America has none, just one that is widely accepted and used.
Actually America is an English speaking country, most states have it as official, it is de facto official at the federal level, and you have to speak it to become a citizen. So yes, it's the official language.
As the OP said. Would you move to Mexico without learning Spanish first?
Depends on the reason for moving.
If I was wanted by the police for murder, then yeah. :v:

To expect one to learn Engliah once they get here is inevitable. To expect them to have a comprehensive knowledge of one of the hardest languages to learn before getting here and ignoring the ecnomic and social conditions they are in is not.

No, the United States has no official language as it would be against Freedom of Speech.
And you'll find that the states that do have English listed as the official language have a quite negative viewpoint of immigration.
They could at least learn it once they're in the US, I get pissed that there's Mexicans speaking Spanish all over the fucking place, it annoys me, I'm fine with it if it's in their house, but in public places no.
We're not complaining the language exists, it's just most of us don't see why a whole country has to learn spanish against a couple million immigrants having to learn english.
so you can communicate with people
if you wanna talk to people who speak spanish learn spanish, the same applies for anyone who wants to talk to people who speak english
there's no they vs us and english isn't even the native language of the US anyway

Oh yeah, that's why it's a requirement to take 2 years of a different language to graduate highschool right?

English isn't the hardest language to learn.
