Havana, Cuba (CNN)On Friday, the American flag will once again fly over the U.S. Embassy in Cuba, the most potent symbol of the shift in relations between two countries that throughout the Cold War bristled with open hostility toward one another.
Secretary of State John Kerry will travel to Havana for fewer than 12 hours to officiate the reopening of the embassy that was closed in 1961 when the Eisenhower administration severed diplomatic ties with the government of then 34-year-old Fidel Castro.
I thought Americans could visit Cuba, they just have to do it through another nation, not directly from the US?

Yes, it wasn't legal before though. And if something bad would happen, there was no embassy there before. And it becomes expensive. Direct flight from Dulles or Miami to Havana will be way cheaper than flying from some other country.
Cuba, soon we can be friends!

Technically yes and technically no. You can travel to Cuba through another nation, but IIRC if the government finds out they could suspend you from returning to the U.S.

They couldn't make you not come home but if bad shit happens in Cuba...you're on your own. (Read the tons of stories about Americans jailed in Cuba)
A spat that lasted far longer than sanity dictated. the Cold War has been over for over 24 years.
