The 61-year-old American, who has predicted new technologies arriving before, says our understanding of genes and computer technology is accelerating at an incredible rate. He says theoretically, at the rate our understanding is increasing, nanotechnologies capable of replacing many of our vital organs could be available in 20 years time. Mr Kurzweil adds that although his claims may seem far-fetched, artificial pancreases and neural implants are already available. Mr Kurzweil calls his theory the Law of Accelerating Returns. Writing in The Sun, Mr Kurzweil said: "I and many other scientists now believe that in around 20 years we will have the means to reprogramme our bodies' stone-age software so we can halt, then reverse, ageing. Then nanotechnology will let us live for ever. "Ultimately, nanobots will replace blood cells and do their work thousands of times more effectively. "Within 25 years we will be able to do an Olympic sprint for 15 minutes without taking a breath, or go scuba-diving for four hours without oxygen. "Heart-attack victims – who haven't taken advantage of widely available bionic hearts – will calmly drive to the doctors for a minor operation as their blood bots keep them alive. "Nanotechnology will extend our mental capacities to such an extent we will be able to write books within minutes. "If we want to go into virtual-reality mode, nanobots will shut down brain signals and take us wherever we want to go. Virtual sex will become commonplace. And in our daily lives, hologram like figures will pop in our brain to explain what is happening. "So we can look forward to a world where humans become cyborgs, with artificial limbs and organs."
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/science/science-news/6217676/Immortality-only-20-years-away-says-scientist.html Main question is, if you had the ability to, would you do this?
I shall live forever.
That sounds a little ridiculous.
Don't they say this every few months?
I shall live forever.
Inmortality sounds boring... [editline]09:25PM[/editline] but I shall live forever
Nah, I'd hate to live forever.
That's awesome. We could use the tech to replace damaged organs in accident victims.
Yes!
I CAN FLY Meh, I don't know if i would like to believe.
I could believe longer average lifespans (~100 in developed nations) within the next 30 years, but not immortality or extreme abilities.
Anyone remember the Fountain of Youth from ~500 years ago? We still haven't found it, so I don't think we'll be immortal in 20 years.
says our understanding of genes and computer technology is accelerating at an incredible rate.
lol that's cuz humans are spiral beings we're going to evolve so much that we destroy the universe
I hope so. Technology does change fast I can see this happening but my guess is more in the 40 year area.
They say that about everything. Just think off Scientists are the Valve of real life
I might actually go to college and get a good job so I can pay for all the nanobot stuff in the future.
Damn, I'll be almost 40 by then. I was hoping for it a little sooner so I can stay in my 20s or 30s.
Sounds like he gets a little wishful towards the end there, but none-the-less... I shall be nothing less than super human! :science:
I might actually go to college and get a good job so I can pay for all the nanobot stuff in the future.
Will definitely be worth it once it becomes a standard medical practice.
I sure hope so. I think we should stop being afraid of such enhancement and stop fearing that they will "deprive us of our humanity". The will to improve and make things better with ourselves is what makes us human. I believe being human is about looking at nature and simply not being satisfied, and saying "I can do better". It is what seperates us from the other forms of life on this planet. Sure some would call it playing "God", but I think getting to the point where we can play "God" should be our ultimate goal.
i shall live forever to see the future and aid the people.
I don't want to live forever. :suicide:
yes, If I had the ability I would. without a second thought. I am very interested in watching the course of humanity and the universe. not to mention the fact that my greatest fear is running out of time.
If this actually happens, awesome.
Damn, I'll be almost 40 by then. I was hoping for it a little sooner so I can stay in my 20s or 30s.
Well my guess is that the Nanobots could make you look younger since they already make you live forever anyways which would mean they would have to replace dead cell n stuff like that.
Of everything there there only thing I saw was this, "Virtual sex will become commonplace." The future sounds like an alright place!
....... I shall live forever
Anyone remember the Fountain of Youth from ~500 years ago? We still haven't found it, so I don't think we'll be immortal in 20 years.
The Fountain of Youth isn't anything to do with science though and most probably doesn't exist, so what's your point?
I don't want to live forever. :suicide:
Exactly, if I had to live forever I'd never get to retire. No way in Hell I'm working for 1000 years.
Anyone remember the Fountain of Youth from ~500 years ago? We still haven't found it, so I don't think we'll be immortal in 20 years.
the fountain awesome movie.
