That's unfortunate. Hopefully they give a full post-mortem on what went wrong and where backers' money went.

No, the best they can do is have any remaining funds (assuming there is any left) to be given back to backers.

Those backers weren't buying a product, they were investing in a business venture, and there is no legal guarantee that a business venture succeed.

Key word here is donating. You're buying the possibility of a released product - not the guarantee of one. That and the final product you might get could be something you finally end up hating or disliking.
Kickstarter is not a game shop, it's a dream land where people funnel money to make dreams come true. And some of these dreams can turn to nightmare.
