The dust seems to have settled down, after AMD's launch of the Radeon HD 6990, extending the red-team's performance lead previously held precariously by the Radeon HD 5970, to the GeForce GTX 580. It looks like NVIDIA will challenge the performance leadership with GeForce GTX 590, a dual-GPU graphics card that uses two GF110 GPUs (the ones on GTX 570 and GTX 580), for an SLI-on-a-stick solution. Rumors of NVIDIA working on this card became concrete as early as in November 2010, when NVIDIA's reference board became public for the first time.
Latest reports suggest that NVIDIA has chosen March 22 as the launch day of GeForce GTX 590. Incidentally, that is also the launch date of EA/Crytek's much-hyped, initially DirectX 9 action/shooter game, Crysis 2. GeForce GTX 590 uses two GF110, though the shader configuration and clock speeds are not known. Since NVIDIA is chasing the top-spot, you can expect the most optimal configuration for the GF110s. A total of 3 GB (1536 MB per GPU system) on board, and NVIDIA's workhorse PCI-E bridge, nForce 200 will be the traffic cop and radio station between the two GPUs. The card will be able to do 3DVision Surround (NVIDIA's multi-display single head technology comparable to ATI Eyefinity) on its own, without needing a second card.
Stop posting that you won't buy/can't afford this card, it's not relevant and no one cares
Glory...

Guess I'll be living with my 2x GTX460s for now, though. That price tag.
Can't wait to see the numbers.
*choke*
hopefully this will be more than just a title grabber so that regular people can use it, not almost watercooling required like the 6990
I don't hold much hope though.
Awesome, lets see how this affects the price of the GTX 580.
Awesome, lets see how this affects the price of the GTX 580.
minimally, if at all
if the jump from a 570s price/performance to a 580s almost defines being an enthusiast, then the jump from a 580 to a 590 will define being a nutter
I was hoping the 590 would replace the 580 as the high performer, knocking the 580 down to fill the 570's spot.
If it doesn't, then meh, I was getting a 570 anyway (A cheaper 580 would have just been nicer)
It will probably be just as loud as a 6990, you have to remember that neither AMD or Nvidia have created a card that consumes this much power, they will probably do the same thing as AMD, a single fan in the middle, judging by the placement of the GPU cores. Nvidia could end up using a triple slot cooler and using 2 fans if desired, as they have power issues they need to worry about much more than AMD, and it's going to take noticeably more power to have a chance at paring with the 6990.
All I can really expect from this is a more power hungry card that nips the heels off the 6990 but has a quieter cooling solution by perhaps taking up another slot, assuming it is something remarkable. The 6990, however, it is not "annoying" or "whiny" with the noise it generates, despite the dB readings. It's more of the sound of air rushing vigorously through the card, according to several review sites and youtube videos.

Is that 3x DVI I spot? No displayport? That's not really forward-thinking in terms of display technology, but it's still awesome for surround setups.

No? The 590 is in a class of its own. The only time you get price drops is when a company releases a new card in the same class as an older card.

From what we've seen from the GTX 570 and GTX 580, I don't think noise is anything to worry about.

3xDVI and 1 mini displayport

I do know EVGA will have non reference coolers on there edition of the 590 most likely that's going to be standard.
I remember when the 9800 GX2 came out, I though it was going to be the next best thing for the next ten years and I was wrong
But it will always have a home in my PCIx16 slot

If you upgrade, give me the card.

the slot exhaust on that card confuses me, half of it does nothing

Still a badass card in my opinion and I'd love to own one, as well as an 8800 Ultra.
Can't wait to see how this will compare with the 6990, not just in terms of performance but price, noise, heat as well.
Too many vidya card releases.

personally I wouldn't give a shit if it doesn't match up to the 6990 as long as the price scales accordingly and the temps and noise are suitable for regular users
Now THIS is the powerhouse that I've been waiting for.

oh shit no 2 competing cards coming out at similar times, however will we cope

Am I the only that has noticed this?

No.
When I launch Crysis 2 with my FRAPS applet up on my G19 it labels it as D3D9.
Its funny how they said in 2009 that the GTX 295 could never be beat.
And here we are.

Initially DirectX 9 as in it's going to be DX9-only on launch.

Nope. There aren't enough SKU's for that. It's limited release and the most you'll get is three fab batches because the chips have to be cherry picked. Spooling for q4 refresh is already underway.

What they didn't know technology is always progressing?
